Hello everyone, it has been awhile since I posted on here, or even been on here for that matter, I have been ill with a severe lung infection that almost sent me to the scrapyard in the sky. But now I am on the mend and working on my locomotive servicing facility again and I am wondering, other than a roundhouse, turn table, coal towers, water towers and cranes what other types of building would typically be seen in a FRISCO facility. I have added a section gang building and I am also wondering, I have 3 semifore signals and want to wire them up and use them, would it be typical to see one or 2 for that matter facing away from each other to enter and leave the servicing facility in signaled territory? I will post some new pictures up of my progress so far so ya'll can see what has been done so far, feel free to critique any and all pictures!!!!
Glad to hear that you are recovering! The Grim Reaper is no fun to play with! I had 2 bouts with him last year. You will be on my prayer list!! Sounds like a steam era facility. But, even steam used some type of petroleum filling equipment for the oil burners. And, washracks to clean the road grime off the engines when turned. Just a couple of thoughts. Dan
The small engine facility at Neodesha contained: Boiler Room and coal bin Machine Shop Shopmen's Washroom/Locker Room Blacksmith Shop Paint Shop Sand House (dryer) Engineer's Washroom/Locker Room Roundhouse Foremen's Office and Store Room Record Room Ash Pit and Conveyor Lot's of traffic to consider... inbound: Coal Fuel Oil Sand Hardware(staybolts/nuts/bolts/rivets etc) Lumber Boilerplate Brass/Steel/Sheet metal Flues Lubricants oil/alemite Lagging etc Outbound: Cinders Scrap Metal
Once again, Karl hits a home run! I was going to add: Oil Storage Tanks Crew Houses Hand Car Sheds welding equipment Derails What era are you modeling?
Karl's comprehensive description of the traffic flow at a small locomotive service facility makes a great case for choosing this type of modeling subject. Even for a modeler without a large amount of real estate, all or parts of such a facility could make for a lot of operation. At several times, I'd sketched out preliminary plans of modeling the Chaffee, MO division point in the 1940s, but simply focusing on the shop and roundhouse tracks. Best Regards,
Don - Wasn't there some sort of lighted signal near the coal tower at North Yard in Springfield? I've seen a photo of it in "Frisco Power," and I'm pretty sure someone around here once explained what it was for, but I can't find the thread/post. Nevertheless, your point is spot-on: no need for semaphore signals in a yard. For me, that's a very good reason for modeling either a terminal or a dark branchline. Best Regards,
If it's what I'm thinking about it was a thing with a bunch of lights on it that corresponded to the yard track the train was supposed to enter. I've never seen signals in and out of any engine terminal.
That signal had a (a pair of) combination of lights and signs below with "North Yard" below one and "Kansas Yard" below the other. I imagined they governed the two main tracks, but I never understood the details of how they were operated?? Tom G.
