Some Significant Passenger Train Dates - 1948-1960

    Here is some miscellaneous passenger train info I've collected, mostly from timetables and elsewhere.

    April 30, 1948
    Trains No 1-2, "The Texas Special" inaugurated as a diesel powered, mostly streamline car train.

    Trains 7-8, "The Bluebonnet" discontinued between St. Louis and Vinita, OK. The Bluebonnet then became M-K-T only train and ran on their line between Kansas City and Texas points.


    December 1951

    Trains 507-508, "The Black Gold" numbers changed to trains No 517-518.

    June 1952

    Trains No 5-6, St. Louis-Springfield passenger local cut back to St. Louis-Newberg.

    December 1953

    Trains No 20-21, "Highline" passenger local numbers changed to trains No 21-22.

    May 28, 1954

    Trains No 21-22, "Highline" passenger local discontinued.

    September 30, 1956

    Trains No 107-108, "The Sunnyland" changed from Memphis-Birmingham to Kansas City-Birmingham routing.

    Trains No 101-102, "The Sunnyland" connection - Springfield-Memphis discontinued.

    Trains No 103-104, Kansas City-Springfield passenger local discontinued.


    September 30, 1957

    Trains No 3-4, "The Will Rogers" changed to daytime passenger local.

    Trains No 5-6, St. Louis-Newburg passenger local discontinued.


    January 5, 1959

    Trains No 1-2 ,"The Texas Special" discontinued. The Texas Special then became M-K-T only train and ran on their line between Kansas City and Texas points. The Katy ended service south of Dallas on 7/27/1964. They discontinued their train on 7/2/1965.

    January 19, 1960

    Trains No 517-518, "The Black Gold" discontinued.

    May 23, 1960

    Trains No 117-118, "The Firefly" discontinued.

    October 16, 1960

    Trains No 309-310, "The Meteor" connection between Monett-Wichita discontinued.

    September 18, 1965
    Trains No 807-808, "Sunnyland" connection between St. Louis-Memphis discontinued.

    December 10, 1967
    Trains No 101-102, "Sunnyland" discontinued. Ending revenue passenger service on the Frisco.
