I have been busy trying to finish up a new Update for my Passenger Car Photo Index and while working on the Frisco page I realized that I am lacking a huge chunk of histories for the MofW cars. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it!!! The cars I am needing histories for are the following... Baggage - mail: 105644 105645 105648 109105 Mail - baggage - coach: 105502 ex-82 or 83 Baggage - express: 109125 109142 Horse - express: 105643 Express boxcar rblt. from troop sleeper: X999 109149 Baggage - coach: 105306 Coaches: (I think they were originally coaches...) 102916 770 - 775 series??? 102989 Possibly 1078, 1102 - 1108, 1203 series? 105280 105298 105467 105472 108030 Possibly 1203, 1207, 1208 or 1213? Pullman sleepers: 105401 105430 I think it was a Pullman sleeper.
Not sure what "bump" means?? --105644 ex AC&F RPO-baggage 219 --105645 ex RPO-bag 206 --105648 ex RPO-bag 208 --109105 ex baggage 444, previously RPO-bag 222 --105502 weed sprayer car, ex Firefly coach-bag-RPO 83 --109125 ? --109142 ex baggage 360 (Frisco didn't have "horse-baggage" cars) --105643 was ex-Pullman Magdalen Tower, then used as coach 1816, then rebuilt to baggage 446 before assignment to m/w. --X-999 ?? Sounds more like a Missouri Pacific or M-K-T m/w number. --109149 ? --105306 ex coach 1051 --102916 ? --102989 ? --105280 ex chair car 744 --105298 ex chair car 735 --105467 ex sleeper-buffet "Memphis" (NOT diner-lounge "Memphis") --105472 ex coach 1057 --108030 Probably ex "deluxe" coach 1203 --105401 ? --105430 ? Jerry, Thank you for moving this project forward. Quick note concerning one of the express boxcars rebuild from a former troop sleeper. X999 was a code for retirement / scrapping. It was not a car number but a designation of retirement and movement to scrap. Many cars from a variety of former services ended their lives being cut up by carmen and laborers just north of the Consolidated Freight Car Shops (a/k/a West Shops). After being cut up, their remains were loaded into gondolas, sold and melted down. Many of these carried the white line of death through the former reporting marks and number. They were then spray painted temporarily with X999 designating send to the scrapper. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mark
Is there a photo of a car marked SLSF x-999 anyplace?? Was the number stenciled on the car? Never saw one?? Was this number put or more than one or all scrapped cars? Tom
Tom, There is a photo of a x999 car on Mike Condren's web site. It is in the Non-Locomotive Photos section, on the Passenger Cars page. Please see the 11th photo down. http://www.condrenrails.com/Frisco Catalog/PASSENGER-CARS.htm The car is in the Springfield Kansas Avenue Yard, shops area sitting on the Slip Track. It is parked just west of the North Park Avenue grade crossing. The elevated track to the right is the Clinton Subdivision (a/k/a High Line) main line track. The Reclamation Plant or scrap yard is out of view just to the left, north of the West Shops in this view. Down the track to the west is Benwood Yard, the Rail Plant and the Kerr-McGee Tie Treating Plant. Equipment designated for scrapping received the X999 designation. This designation is not a car number and therefore is not used with the reporting marks SLSF. The original reporting marks and number were lined out in white spray paint, but generally still showed for accounting and tracking purposes. Cars, cabooses, cranes, etc. designated X999 were moved on their own wheels, on or in another car (flat or gondola) for scrapping at the Reclamation Plant. Many pieces of equipment ended their lives white lined ("the white line of death") and designation X999. Other folks may have more photos to contribute of X999 designated equipment. They were common sights in Hospital Trains or around the Reclamation Plant and Benwood Yard. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mark
I'm sorry... "bump" is the practice of "bumping" a post back to the top of recent posts without having to type a lot of extra text. I had not seen a response to his original post and wanted to put it back in the limelight in case someone who could help may have missed it.
Thanks, guys... still a few cars needing histories but this is a major help in getting quite a few of them covered. I do appreciate it!!! http://trainweb.org/passengercars/Indices/S1a.htm
