I have been sorting some old TRAINS magazines, and I came across an article in the March 1994 issue called Sacred Places. In the article, 10 places were nominated which represent railroading in North America, and which should be seen by every railfan. They are Tehachapi Loop; Vaughan, MS; B&O RR Museum; Saluda Mountain; Promontory; Kate Shelley Bridge; Grand Central Terminal; Horseshoe Curve; Chama, NM; Spiral Tunnels.

Let's put a Frisco spin on it. What are your nominations for the Sacred Spots on the Frisco.

I'll start with two easy ones.

    The West Shops
    Dixon Hill

This is probably a biased post considering where I live and the remoteness of the location, but here goes my opinion and why.

My nomination would be the preserved water tank at Beaumont and the concrete viaduct on the same abandoned line about 5 mile east of there. These two places will probably remain as examples of trhe Frisco for eternity as the water tank has been lovingly preserved through the efforts of one area woman and the fact that the viaduct with the words "Frisco Lines" formed into it is concrete and located in a place where no highway construction will endanger it.

Someone could easily pass by it 100 years from now and it, and hopefully both would still be there. Those truly qualify as "sacred places" now and for eternity in my opinion!

For bridges, I nominate the following:
Mississippi River Bridge at Memphis (the "Frisco" bridge)
The Warrior River iron truss bridge at Sipsey Alabama (1908, I believe); now a one-lane road bridge

For turntables, the Fort Smith turntable, now at Eureka Springs, Arkansas (and still operating)

For structures, the Crescent Hotel at Eureka Springs, Arkansas

The triple crossing at Columbus Kansas and the foot bridge in Springfield, Mo.

These are all really good places . . . .

I "second" the Springfield footbridge since I spent so much time on it as a kid watching trains.

I would add the tower at SY, before and after the move.

    Ship IT on the Frisco!

I nominate Cherokee Yard since I work there. It has been the spot for Frisco for me since I was old enough to snap blurry pictures with a 110 camera. My grandfather worked on steam engines there after WWII and most of the Frisco men and women I knew as a teenage train nut in the late 70s worked out of there running trains on the Oklahoma Sub.

    I miss the Frisco!!
