    Hi guys,
I was just wondering if anyone has used the Rustoleum or Krylon Textured Stone spray paint to simulate ballast? I looked at a can of the light grey and sand the other day and that little light bulb went off in my head again. I was thinking about using the textured stuff on Atlas cork roadbed to simulate ballast, will it work? Sure would save time and keep things a lot neater, and no loose ballast getting into the switches either!

Sounds like you should try it but the ties will look like they are on top of the ballast instead of buried in it. I've wondered what that textured paint could do for model railroading.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case about the ties, but if I use code 83 it should be less pronounced. Even on code 100 it would be about the same effect as the Atlas Tru-Track or Bachmann EZ Track. Either way it is a compromise, but I think I will try it on a scrap piece first just to test the results. I will post pic when I do the test. As for other uses in modeling, the stone texture paint works wonders on buildings, arch bridges, and tunnel facings. The black makes a realistic "tar" roof for buildings too.
