Thursday my wife and I went to the DFW area to check on my aging parents and do a little model railroad business. On the way home to Colorado Springs, we took a detour off of 287 at Vernon and drove west on US 70. Starting about 16 miles or so east of Paducah and heading west, the old QA&P right of way is clearly visible next to the highway for a couple of miles or so. As I've said in other posts, my grandfather was a division lineman for the QA&P until around 1954. It was fun envisioning my grandfather riding his speeder to work on the lines along the way.

We were trying to beat a snow storm due to hit Colorado Springs so we didn't have time to do any significant "snooping". The next trip, we are going to spend more time in that area exploring the QA&P and the Caprock Canyons geography.

Granddad made a couple of comments that I got a kick out of. He once told me that it wasn't a train unless it had a caboose. He also said that he hated the new diesels. If a train wasn't on his schedule or wasn't on time, he could see and hear steamers coming from quite a distance with their smoke and loud exhaust note. That gave him ample time to get his motorcar off of the track. The diesels were much harder to detect and he said he had to bail from a motor car a couple of times!
