New member saying hello. We bought an old home, that we are trying to research. The house, is located approximately 75 feet, from the old train depot. We were informed, that the home was built in 1860. Any help, would be appreciated. Thanks

Jill, Welcome Aboard. Maybe someone from the area might be assistance. Otherwise, check Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. You might be able to at least bracket the year when the house was built.

  4. Hello and welcome!

Keith R.'s suggestion that you check old Sanborn fire insurance maps is a good one. These maps show a lot of detail about town buildings, and Missourians are lucky that the U. of Missouri has scanned all the pre-1923 Missouri Sanborn maps and put them online. Go to http://digital.library.umsystem.edu/cgi/i/image/image-idx?page=index;c=umcscsanic and search by town name to see what might be available.

It would be a long shot, but you could also look for photographs of the Salem depot and see if the house appears in the background of any such photos. See, for example, http://www.missouridepots.com/salemslsf1893.htm

You might also check with town or county government offices or see if there's a local historical society that might have old property records, collections of photographs, etc.

    Good hunting!

Welcome! I have a couple of old Dent County historical books that my parents gave me when I was working on our family tree. My grandfather's farm (Haas) was located in the Hobson Heights area between Rolla & Salem. I grew up in Rolla, but I spent quite a bit of time at several relatives in Salem. I remember several family members were very involved in Salem's centennial celebration (late 50s?) It been so long I can't remember exactly where the train station was located in Salem. I will see what is in these books.

    Try this link. http://www.salemmo.com/walkingtour/map.asp

The McMurtry home is on the other side of town. It looks like the Judson home was very close to the Frisco Depot but torn down. The Woodside home or the Seay home are the next closest. They would have been built 1870-1880. My book (Ozark Heritage-Dent County) says the RR came to Salem in 1872.

Welcome aboard - your county assessor can also be a good source for narrowing down specifics for a particular piece of real property. Sometimes, depending on the county, there is a good deal of information available online.

    Best Regards,
