Thanks, Chris. I would love to see any photos of the channel project or any other related pics. I have much more work to do before pouring water and planting my trees in the swamp scene. I have to buy plaster after work for the bottom. The spackling compound isn't yielding a very good base. Anyway, here's a shot of my swamp forest trees in their finished state. They will be all be moved to new locations in the swamp but they are just stuck here for now. I had fun making these trees and they are very easy to do. I especially like my stumps. More pics as things progress.

Very cool pics, Rich. Thanks. Today I bought the Jordan Miniature's Steamshovel kit which I've just gotta pose somewhere in my swamp scene. I'm having so much fun making swamp trees that I'm going to have a dense swamp forest.

    Jim,

What is the year of the steam shovel?

Jim, you can never have to many trees. If you look elsewhere on the site, there's a picture of cypress trees in the swamp, which is the image that I think that you're going for.

Manny, the instructions say this model was made from 1915-mid 20s. This kit is the most ambitious Jordan kit I've ever seen! Rich you're right. I'm going for that murky, dank Swampeast Missouri look. I've turned out about 15 trees and 10 stumps so far. Each one handcarved and detailed and more is on the way. This most challenging scene has given me the most enjoyment so far. I'm actually considering a separate module for a swampy timber operation scene with log tram, loader and the whole 9 yards. Not enough hours in the day!

By the way, if anyone would like some of my swamp trees PM me. I've got everything set up to make them and I'm cranking them out. This won't last and I could make some extra while I'm at it. I'm just sayin'.

Thank you Jim. I'd love to take you up on your Cypress offer, but unfortunately, there are no Cypress trees in this neck of the woods.

Boy, does Mingo NWR bring back memories. We'd always spend a full Saturday/Sunday there in both the spring and autumn. Visitor Center (playing the Apple IIc game where I'd get to manage whether or not to flood the marsh at a given time during the year), boardwalk hike, and then drive through the refuge.

Good times - and back then, I had NO idea the Frisco had skirted the park. I knew that the Idlewild blind station sign and the Puxico depot had something to do with railroading, but that was it!

    Best Regards,

That boardwalk is awesome. Right smack dab through the middle of the swamp. Ever heard of Leora?

Here's my initial swamp water layer. I may get by with one layer but I may pour one more if needed. I had to plant some trees in the water but the rest will be added as the very last step. They drying time for the two part water really slows things down. I used clear silicone as a dam to hold the water in bounds. I sprayed some black spray paint in the water as I mixed it to add to the murky look. A possible final layer will be clear. So far, so good.

Wow that looks like swamp alright. Thought I saw a gator pop his eyes out of the water there for a moment. . . . .

From the picture, the water looks very convincing as swamp water!

Swamp Beast! I whipped up this steamshovel kit last night and thought I would share a pic of it. I still have some more detailing to do and rigging to add but it turned out just how I wanted. I may have to put this on a separate module.

Wow! Great job Jim. You really are great at capturing realism. Can't wait to see it finished. What are you going to do when Zalma is finished? You can't stop there, are you???
