My dad has a Greer spike which he claimed that he found along the KC Sub right of way. The Greer Spike, which was also known by some as the Jeffery Spike, was often associated with the Rio Grand Southern RR, so my father's "find" was always a bit of a mystery. Not long ago, while searching for some information about the Colorado Narrow Gauge, I came across this website, http://www.drgw.net/info/index.php?n=Main.GreerSpike , that made the claim that the Memphis Road used the Greer Spike.

It seems that the mystery of the spike may be solved. I wonder if the Greer Spikes were used on the Leaky Roof, too.

That's pretty cool, Karl. I know some narrow-gaugers here that would be foaming about now.

I for one! WOW, I had something from the Silverton Northern!
I had 4-5 of those from my Colorado living days.
I suppose that they were left behind during the move.

That's neat Karl, never seen one. Actually, never seen much of a in spikes ever. The modern hairpin excluded.

In the '70's , Bill White , Fred Jesberg and I were out stumbling around on the KCC&S grade somewhere between Olathe and the state line. I found a spike , over in a ditch, which I still have. Alas, it's just a smallish version of a standard spike...not a Greer spike. Which I also have from my hallucinogenic flirtation with narrow gauge back in those days...from Trout Lake, CO. (Along with a spark plug found in a creek bed marked "D&RGW").
