Anybody know of any hobby shops in Arkansas or Mississippi, or have they all gone extinct? I will be in that part of the world for a few days and wondered if there was anything worth stopping by. Brad Slone
There are non that I know of in NE or East Central Mississippi from Meridian to Columbus to Amory to Tupelo. Oh, how I wish! I pick up a few scenery items at craft stores now and then. I live near the AL/MS line about halfway between Memphis and B'ham. The closest brick and mortar stores (for me) that I know of are in B'ham. There is another good one way down in SE Alabama at Enterprise. Outside of those 3, I can't help you at all. While I lived in Meridian, MS from 2000-2004, there was a Hobbytown USA in the Jackson, MS metro area, but I haven't been by there since then so I can't confirm either way. Many of the Hobbytown USA stores I used to visit 10-15 years ago have gone out of business. When I was a teenager, there was "The Sidetrack" in Amory, MS just 23 miles away but it burned down over 20 years ago. I have had to resort to the internet.
Just pick up a Model Railroader from about 10 years ago and see how many shops that were listed then that are now long gone. It's kinda surprising that there are any brick and mortar shops left at all now considering all the internet ordering possibilities of today. I was especially surprised that Denver's Caboose Hobbies closed. If there was ever a shop that seemed successful, that would have been one. They had a HUGE inventory and I wonder how it was all liquidated... Tom G.
There is one in Bald Knob, Arkansas. It is located in the old MP depot. Not sure of their hours, though. GS
From their Facebook page: ARKANSAS TRAVELER HOBBIES 400 E MARKET ST BALD KNOB AR 72010-3501 (501) 724-5326 10:00AM - 6:00PM I could not get the web URL to work. "Arkansastravelerhobbies.com is DOWN It is not just you. The server is not responding..." http://www.arkansastravelerhobbies.com/
I spent quite some time last November with the individual who owns this store. His inventory is somewhat eclectic and he himself is a bit, what shall we say, unusual. Nevertheless, it's worth a visit. GS
Greg, Thanks for the heads up, I stopped by Friday afternoon on my way back through. I can understand what you are saying, but it was definitely worth the visit and I will stop by in the future when I happen to be passing through. I picked up a few old stock items that will work for various projects, even found a bottle of Floquil paint that I can use! Brad
