I happened to pick up a book in my library I haven't looked at for a while, certainly since I developed an interest in the West Bottoms area of KC.
The book is "Train Watcher's Guide to Kansas City" (1991). In referencing the Frisco in the West Bottoms it states after crossing the MP on Santa Fe Street:

"A short distance north the line turns and heads west into Henning Street Yard."

    Later is describing Frisco yards:

"There were a number of small yards in the area, one of which was Henning Street Yard in the West Bottoms".

I've never heard of a Frisco yard in the area. Also, looking at Google Maps I can't even find a Henning Street in the West Bottoms area.

Has anyone every heard of a Henning Street yard?

Mike Walker's Comprehensive Railroad Atlas of North America (Prairies East & Ozarks) show this yard on page 42. It's just south of the CGW's Ohio Street Yard. I need to dig up my industry schematics plus a few other items.

Although my computer has returned from the Geek Squad, I still have not had a chance to perform a restore from back-up, and I need to reload the Link-Sys software.

Thanks for the information Karl. I looked it up in the Atlas and just can't see how they squeezed a yard in that area. I'm sure the West Bottoms expert Mark has some input on this one. My track plan really needed a yard in that area, so this could work quite well. Especially since it couldn't be more than a couple of tracks.

    John,

Henning Street was a vacated roadway that was platted in the West Bottoms (aka the Central Industrial District) of Kansas City. Later plats indicate a name change to Jarboe Street.

The roadway shows on Sanborn Insurance Maps (1906-1917) as intersecting 8th Street from the north between the 1000 and 1100 blocks. This is approximately at the eastern end of the former Loose Wiles Cracker & Candy Company / Sunshine Biscuit factory.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks.

    John,

I started a new thread (Kansas City Track Map and Industries, 1930's?) posting industry maps and lists of Kansas City West Bottoms, circa 1930's? Maybe a little old but I bet the track layout didn't change a lot from these maps to the era you are modeling. Could Henning Street Yard be location #98 on the first map?
