Hanna Stoker

    Gentlemen,

I am writing an article for TIES magazine (the in-house journal of the Southern Railway Historical Association) about the improvements made to Southern's Ks and Ks-1 series 2-8-0s during WW2. One of the things they shared with Frisco steam, particularly the rebuilt 1350-1356 series Mikados, was the application of a Hanna stoker. I am trying to find photos and diagrams for these late model Hanna stokers which are different from the H-2 model used on N&W steam, as well as an earlier version used by the N&W and the CB&Q.

So far I have only been able to find pics of the firebox door on 1355 and 1351. Does anyone have any photos or pics of the entire stoker mechanism, particularly the 2-cylinder stoker engine, he could share with me? I'm hoping someone got a few pics of the Hanna stoker that came out of 1352 before it was shipped off to North Carolina.

    Thanks,

Hoping that someone around here will have the info you need; this sounds like a fascinating article in the works. Incidentally, are you any kin to some of the Queeners in and around Knoxville who are in the insurance business?

    Chris,

    I hope so too!

The first part of my article on the SR K series 2-8-0 was published last year:

    https://srha.net/ties-magazine-issue/ties-magazine-third-quarter-2024-volume-38-no-3/

Part 2 of my article is a deep dive into the piston valve conversions of the saturated K class and the WW2 era improvements which saw the application of Hanna stokers, Worthington SCA-2 and Elesco coil-type feedwater heaters, along with 10,000 gallon / 16 ton tenders rebuilt from 7500 gallon / 12.5 ton originals. I am striving to be as thorough as possible with the available data.

To answer your other question, yes, I had a distant cousin, now deceased, here in Knoxville who was a State Farm agent for many years.

    Warmly,

    Dave

My copy of the 1941 Locomotive Cyclopedia contains some photos and drawings of the Hanna H-4 appliance. Of interest?

    Karl,

Yes, thank you very much. Are you able to scan those pages and e-mail them to me offline?

BTW, the best pic I have found thus far of a late model Hanna stoker on a Southern Ks 2-8-0 is just a glimpse of the stoker engine beneath the cab (attached).

    Dave,

Can scan and send pericopes from the Cyclopedia. Send your email to me via PM. I have added a few shots of the 1351 that I took during 2013. The Frisco placed the stoker engines "inside" the tender.
