Re: A teaser... Perhaps signage. If it were reversed it would make a stamp for sign making. I give up.
Re: A teaser... Yes, Jim. A Heinz Pickling Station. More to come. Let's just say I love diggin' for old pictures and found a beaut!
Re: A teaser... Yes Keith, you are correct. I'll be posting up more information this afternoon as my sign maker presents the letters to me. So many projects! Ugh, can't keep track!
Re: A teaser... Incoming traffic will also include cukes in those ventilated box cars. There certainly will be some dill and garlic brought in some how. It sounds like a very fine industry! George "I can smell the aroma now" Nelson
Re: A teaser... I have a fleet of 33 Heinz reefers and coffin cars to go along with the "teaser". Yes, Frisco and SA&AP Ventilated Box Cars will be bringing produce into the "teaser". Much to surprise y'all with...
Re: A teaser... Signage! Big thanks to Dave at Vectorcut. The font is 100% dead-balls accurate! Sign making to commence shortly. Stay tuned for further details...
Re: A teaser... Looks like you're good to go. I can't wait to see some construction underway. I need some inspiration right now.
Re: A teaser... To inspire my friend Jim, today I picked up some scale lumber and began cutting to create the facial of the Heinz Salting Station. The NWSL Chopper is an invaluable tool. It did wonders! Now all I need to do is go get some Elmers Wood Glue and start putting this sign together. Here are some pics of the work done today. Next will be to stain the sign and paint the lettering. I also need to get a resin casting kit from Micro*Mark to copy the pickle. I'll do that next week. I should be able to finish this sign in the next few days. The sign will be stained using Dr. Ben's Consortium Weathering Pigments. Lettering will be a combination of Tamiya Acrylics and Scalecoat II. More information coming. Stay tuned! Manny
Re: A teaser... I realized that the five 2x6's which support the pickle aren't quite long enough, so I'll have to cut them again. No biggie. This is trial and error. With only 3/4 of the sign visible in the picture, I'm doing the best I can. The main issue is the Heinz brooch which isn't to scale to the real size Heinz Pickle on the station, so a little 'fudging' has to be made. It will all work out. Thanks for looking.
Re: A teaser... I love ventilated box cars. Many lasted into the 60s on the ACL even! I assume you will have some "strays" like the ACL, SAL, Central of Georgia and Georgia, Midland & Gulf? Joe Toth
Re: H.J. Heinz Salting Station (BIS Sassen Pickle Works) Hey Y'all, Today I put together the wood sign, gluing it together and now she is drying. I used painters tape to hold the vertical supports in place. The boards went on easy! The width of a No. 11 X-Acto blade is perfect for the 2" distance between boards. They came out nice and square. I ordered from Dr. Ben's Consortium today some of his Rustic Oak Weathering Stains. These are meant to replace the now defunct Floquil and are non-toxic. They are very popular with hobbyists. You can see that I painted the Heinz letters copper. They will receive a dull cote once dry. Next week I will order the clay, talc, and resin from Micro*Mark. The sign will be finished shortly. Thanks for looking. Manny
Re: H.J. Heinz Salting Station (BIS Sassen Pickle Works) Nice project photo group. I wish had used the painters tape idea while building my sawmill roof. I'm sure you know that stain won't cover places that glued has dried on. You're probably more careful with glue than I am. Good job.
Re: H.J. Heinz Salting Station (BIS Sassen Pickle Works) Thanks Jim, I learned about the tape the other day. They referred to using masking tape, but I thought that to be too gluey on the back. Painters tape holds and doesn't leave any residue when removed. As for the gluing, I bought these tools for that purpose. They are micro-brushes. You should be able to find them on eBay or your local hobby shop. They put the glue or paint right where you want it and need it. Best investment I've made along those lines. I used Elmer's Wood Carpentry Glue which is paint/stain friendly. But yes, I did use great care to only get glue where needed and wiped any excess away. Manny
Re: H.J. Heinz Salting Station (BIS Sassen Pickle Works) Test fit of the lettering. I think it looks great! The spacing is a little bit off from the original photo, but that is because the pickle is not scaled according to the photograph. I think it will make a great representation of the Heinz signage. What do y'all think? I still have to work out the spacing to scale, so it will look very close to what it is right now. I can't wait to cast the pickle, paint that and letter. Green pickle, with yellow lettering. My weathering stain is in the mail so I should have that in a day or two. A little 220 sand paper to smooth things out and the sign will be almost finished. Manny
