Hey folks, I figure I ask this question since the search function hasn't worked on here for me. But is there a list for which engine classes used which whistles? Either here on the forums, or documentation as to which engine had which whistle equipped? Anything 1920's era and onward.
I don't recall ever seeing such a list. Probably you would have better luck looking at photos. You'll see a lot of long bell 3 chimes on later power.
So I've done some research, based on Don's initial suggestion. 4500's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 4400's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 4300's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 4200's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 4100's - (Step Top 6 Chime) 4000's - (Step Top 6 Chime & Hancock 3 Chime) 3800's - (???) 3700's - (Step Top 6 Chime) 3600's - (Step Top 6 Chime) 3500's - (Step Top 6 Chime) 2000's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 1613's - (Hancock 3 Chime & Step Top 6 Chime) 1500's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 1400's - (Step Top 6 Chime) 1350's - (Hancock 3 Chime) 1306's - (Hancock 3 Chime & Step Top 6 Chime) 1200's - (Step Top 6 Chime & Hancock 3 Chime) 1100's - (Step Top 6 Chime) 1060's (4-6-4) - (Hancock 3 Chime) 1060's (4-6-2) - (Step Top 6 Chime) 1040's - (Step Top 6 Chime & Hancock 3 Chime) 1015's - (Step Top 6 Chime & Hancock 3 Chime) 1000's - (Step Top 6 Chime) Spot Series - (Step Top 6 Chime) 182's (Step Top 6 Chime & Hancock 3 Chime) 72, 73 (Step Top 6 Chime) High Numberd 500's, 600's & 700's - (Vast Majority Step Top 6 Chime, Select Few Hancock 3 Chime) I did this to the best of my ability looking through old photos, either here on the archive, the few books available or some negatives in my collection. I will say this may not be 100% accurate but this is my observation. Since there is some sheet metal usually shielding a majority of whistles, some may have more variety. For the case of the 3800's, the whistles were pretty difficult to determine due to the whistle's being outright covered usually, for these I'd assume Step Top 6 Chime's like the rest of the 0-6-0's. If anybody has any corrections/additions feel free to mention it.
