On one of the Facebook groups, someone posted a YouTube link to a short video from the 1960s of a Frisco train pulled by F units after the motive power, there are frames with some of the cars. There is a covered Frisco Gon at the 33 second mark, but the car I want to ask about comes in at around the 42 seconds mark… it appears to be a Frisco Wheel car.. I’ve attached a screen capture from that point in the video. Am I right? Does anyone have a cleaner shot of a car like this? it looks like it may have been rebuilt from a boxcar or a gondola with fixed ends. Paul
Interesting video, indeed. Around 0:23 to 0:33 it looks like military equipment on 3 flat cars. The flats are from common carriers like Wabash and CNW, however, not USDOT.
I agree with Paul's comment. Did Frisco have many "covered gons" in it's inventory? At 0:36 is a clear picture of one. I usually do not see any of these in photos and consider this as a rare.
Found my answer! Went to Freight Equipment, select Gondola, 64000 Series Gondola Diagram posted by Keith Robinson. Thanks Keith!
Hi John, Were they coil steel type gons? Any other info on these cars? Might needs me some doncha know.
Hey Tom, Don't know if Frisco hauled steel coil loads in these. According to the diagram drawing and notes the floors and end were wood. The capacity is 140,000 lbs. The height from floor to mid point of cover is 4'-11 27/32". I guess you can haul 3 coils, probably 2 placed over the trucks. I have a Athearn BB of this model (not Frisco) . If you have a coil load (I know you do) give me the dimension, I'll make a one up and place it in the gon and see if the lid will fit on it. Walthers have these, but don't give dimensions. On second thought, probably the steel mill made coil loads to fit the car!
