Does anyone know of a photo of Frisco/ Sante Fe run thru locos ? Just wondering what paint schemes would be correct.
    Thanks

Not quite sure what you mean by run thru's. What I saw on the Tulsa to Avard runs were the QLA and all of these were pulled by Santa Fe units from Tulsa. These were in the Blue/Yellow paint at that time. There may well have been mixed Frisco/ATSF trains, but I did not see any. (Not that I saw every train). I was told that they were frisco crews that changed out at Enid. I do remember having seen a photo of Hi nose U-25's going down Cajon pass on the lead of the train.

The original Frisco/Santa Fe dedicated "run-thru" locomotives likely might have been SLSF 5005 and SLSF 5007, along with two then-newer Frisco F9B's. SLSF 5005 and 5007 were both 1500HP 567B powered F3A's purchased in February, 1954. Prior to the end of 1961, both F3A's were rebuilt into equivalent F9A's, with F9 appearing bodies, 1750HP 567C engines, dynamic brakes (the only Frisco cab A-units to have d/b), a second nose headlight in the door, and front-end m/u connections. This was done so SLSF 5005 and 5007 could m/u with two 1750HP Frisco F9B units (SLSF 5140-5152, purchased in 1954 and 1957) to form an ABBA set of 1750HP units with d/b to serve as pooled motive power with the Santa Fe, on a daily through freight between Los Angeles and Birmingham. This arrangement was done at the Santa Fe's suggestion so as to avoid a several hour delay at Floydada, Texas, where the ATSF normally interchanged trains with the SLSF's subsidiary QA&P. The eastbound train was coded the CTX, while the westbound was coded QLA.

There is a nice picture of a Frisco ABBA set of F-units, led by SLSF 5007, bringing the CTX into Summit, California up Cajon Pass on February 21, 1962, in Chard Walker's classic book Cajon, on page 176, original edition. This book is out of print, but is usually available in any large library that has railroad-oriented books, plus there may be later editions. I don't know how long this specific run-thru with the ATSF lasted, and what newer Frisco locomotives later participated, but SLSF 5005 and 5007 served until mid-1973, providing almost 20-years of Frisco service as F3A's/F9A's.

There are many pics of SLSF 5005 and 5007 available on frisco.org as well as from the normal sources. They look pretty much like normal F9A's, with only a few minor differences.

Fascinating stuff, especially for the modeler. It would be fun to model 5005 / 5007 and then run them only with the appropriately-modeling F9B units. Plus, I've never given any thought to modeling Floydada, but what Ken and Karl have both provided here make it seem like an interesting "layout design element," especially for someone wanting to modeling SL-SF and ATSF motive power.

    Best Regards.

Thanks, guys. There are a couple of FA1's floating around here, have been toying with a mixed set that can run thru on the Cedar Hill & Southern. Not necessarily prototypical, but fun to see mixed paint and loco types together !
Gotta get to painting these one of these days !!
