Hello All--I'm looking for some information on the ex-Santa Fe cabooses, particularly ones that ran on the QA&P. Did all have the "Ship it" slogan? Number 1104, as partially seen in the Hofsommer book, seems to maybe just have reporting marks and possibly a herald above. Anyone know what the number of the caboose was on the 'last' train from Floydada? (its Frisco number probably had been replaced by BN by then) I'm painting an Athearn model, as the Athearn offering seemed way too brown.

Just about all the 1100-class Santa Fe cabooses had the "Ship IT" slogan on their sides. All were also red.

BN 11519, nee SLSF 1170 truly brought up the rear with regard to operations on the QAP. Athearn's versions are indeed too brown.

  5. The August 1978 issue of Prototype Modeler had a article by Jerry M. Hurt on converting the Athearn caboose to a 1100 series SL-SF caboose. The article gives information on which windows to plug along with other detailing information. It is more than a paint and decal conversion, but a good starter conversion. I did one back in the late 70's and spent about 10 hours on it. I seem to recall seeing one of these cabooses painted silver (aluminum?) in work train service at Chaffee, Mo. Ring any bells Roadmaster? You might find a copy of PM at the RR swap meets. I dont have the equiptment to scan it. Maybe some other "Frisco Folk" can help on this. I dont know about copyrite issues. Thanks, River Hill traveler, that looks like what I need if I can find it. My current question (they keep coming up, don't they, as you get into the research..) is this----I now have the number of the caboose on the last QAP train, and the Hofsommer book confirms it had the 'Ship It' slogan. But there's a partial shot of caboose 1104, which seems to only have reporting marks, and I assume, logo above them, near the end, and no slogan. Can anyone confirm? Thanks All Chris.

I was one of those guys who read the Jerry Hurt article and decided that I needed one (or two) of these cabooses for my pike. Here are photos of my two cabooses 1145 and 1166. I think they look ok. It looks like I used a bright red like Santa Fe caboose red but I did not keep notes on these models. I think I did these 10 or 15 years ago but the detail that I added compares well with today's highly detailed, out-of-the-box models.

    Ship IT on the Frisco!

    Rick
