    Frisco Digitalization Project
(from the March 2005 issue of the Arkansas-Boston Mountains Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, P>O. Box 1303, Springdale, AR 72765-1303)

Your Editor recently spoke with Michael Glenn; a local history librarian at the Springfield-Greene County Library in Springfield, MO. Glenn reported that the grant supporting the digitalization and ultimate internet dissemination of various Frisco Museum items had expired in January 2005. However, substantial progress had been made a grant extension has been approved to March 31, 2005.

A lot of work has taken place. The 600-800 photos of Frisco rolling stock, car interiors, and depots (Missouri only) have been completed. Included in this number are selected shop views and postcards. The Frisco employee magazine, initially called the Frisco Man, has been scanned from its beginning circa 1914-17 through 1935. It will be available in PDF format and will be word-searchable. Your Editor has seen a few issues from the mid 1930s. The print quality was mediocre but perhaps it reflected Depression economy efforts.

The third digitization effort involves employee enrollment cards that date from the 1940s. They will enable genealogists to learn more about their Frisco ancestors as the cards contain data as to name ,race, gender job title and place of employment when the card was completed. The card system was implemented to prevent overlaps in retirement coverage by the Railroad Retirement Board and Social Security according to Glenn.

Glenn said he was unsure as to the date when the Frisco items would go on line.It will be located at http:// virtuallymissouri.org. When your Editor checked the site all of the images were about 1½ inches by 1 inch which suggests a technical problem unless you enjoy postage stamp sized images.
