John, you're the man! That photo reveals so much more detail for me and the info on back is nice. My models drivers are 63" which is only an inch off. Not bad. Looks like I need to model some loco brakes and other such goodies. This info and photo are a real boost to my project. Thanks a million. This locomotive looks so cool.

Sorry, Jim, but just have to ask --- You gonna be able to get a proper leading truck for your model?
    With the spoke wheels?
    Those are neat looking.

I've thought about that. My newly ordered Roundhouse 4-4-0 has spoked pilot wheels so I could order a spare pilot from Roundhouse or just find spoked wheels elsewhere or just ignore it until something presents itself. I'm seriously considering using the new Roundhouse model for #151. I'll have to wait and see.

    Jim,

Go to Northwest Shortline's web site and you can get your flush spoked wheels there or go to eBay and find them. Too easy!

    Northwest Shortline....Most likely 88's, 24 or 26 flushes...

    Jim,

Yardbird trains also makes a new modernized front pilot truck for the Mantua 4-4-0 with flush ended spoked wheels. They are listed on eBay right now. You could possibly take them and use them.

I need some opinions. I love my new Roundhouse 4-4-0 and I'm thinking about making it into a representative of #151. With some detail changes it might be close enough. It already has DCC and sound and crawls through turnouts due to its all wheel pickup. It has spoked pilot wheels and I could rebuild a cab roof, move the sand dome back and the bell forward. Move the headlight up and forward with a generator behind it. I know the boiler is fatter but moving the light forward will help make it look better. Not to mention paint, lettering and weathering. What do you guys think? I am going to DCC some day.

    Well - Here's mine!
You are definitely on the right track(pun).
It's a pretty close model to start with; I'd say better than most kit bashing projects start with.

I think you should keep us in the dark from now on (not that I don't look forward to your posts each day) and document your work and pic as an article for Richard just as you have done on the Zalma progress.

PS I really like that spoked lead truck!

As much as I like the Roundhouse 4-4-0 I'm afraid the overall lines just make it impossible to represent the #151 in my opinion so I went back the the AHM/IHC Oldtimer and I think it's going to turn out well. Here's the progress thus far. I really like the headlight/generator combo and the piping for it. I had to make the platform it sits on which is a unique feature to me. Long long way to go but my yardwork gets in the way. I think this model looks very close to the prototype photo so far.

Looks good Jim. Where did you get your steam and sand domes? Don't you need the PSC's anymore?

Yes I do need them. I tore these off of old #97 because I will also be replacing her with a fresh Bachmann Oldtimer in the near future. She's been donating her organs.

It's starting to come together for me. The generator isn't quite big enough but I can live with it for now. The biggest stumbling block that I foresee is an appropriate cow catcher. I'm in a bit of a modeler's slump right now but I wanted to share this progress photo. I've added the whistle, air pump, air tanks under the cab and removed the fenders(thanks Manny for that observation). Not exactly worthy of a Meteor article but it's still fun. There's just not many RTR locos out there that fit my era so I'm forced to kitbash such as it is.

First of all, Jim, if this is a slump, I can't wait to see things when you hit your stride.

Frankly, I'd still enjoy seeing a Meteor article on this. Don't underestimate your efforts.

    Just one modeler's opinion.

    Best Regards,

I added the boiler hand rails last night. I used a straight edge to draw a pencil line along the sides and drilled holes for the stanchions. Here's a progress photo. I still need to come up with a pilot/ cow catcher. Anyone ever scratchbuild one. I need some advice.

I have a question for those knowledgable in the ways of steam locomotives. #151 has a pretty big airpump visible in the prototype photo on the engineers side soooo, would there probably be a good sized horizontal airtank mounted on the opposite side? Maybe placed where the running board was originally and the running board moved up on top of the tank. Am I making sense?

Keith, once again thanks. I'm going for that last image. That looped piping by the air tank would be a real challenge though. I might leave it off. I've seen earlier tanks without it. Tonight I finished the piping on the engineers side. Very nerve racking getting the bends just right, or at least close enough:)

    Hey Jim,

Today, I received a 4-4-0 Athearn revised MDC Kit. I will be putting a Bowser/Cary 4-4-0 boiler on her as described in the 1950's RMC Article with converting a 2-6-0 Roundhouse locomotive. The piping is easy. I have plenty of " U " shaped pipes that you solder brass into, or can use CA type glues. Don't be afraid to do the piping. It's not as difficult as you may think. Keep up the good work.

Well, Manny, if you could spare 3 "U" joints I will put them on her. That would be a nice touch. I'll start on the air tank and running board modification. Good luck on your 4-4-0 project. I may follow your lead using my Athearn/Roundhouse 4-4-0. I've already butchered my boiler anyway so I need to do something with her.
