I came across a web site this evening that has photo's from the area of SW MO, SE KS and a few might be from NE OK. Not only is the Frisco in it, but there is also MP, MKT, KCS and Santa Fe as well (all the railroads on my layout:D)

    Thanks for sharing.

I remember a model RR club in Joplin, IIRC the SW Missouri bunch....I even have a covered hopper from that club. Their layout was in a building in downtown Joplin. Wonder if any of the guys in this club remember that one..............

I remember it. It is still in the same building, above a floral shop if I remember. The club split into two groups. Both groups still hold Model Railroad meets, I believe.
I have several of their cars. They used them on their modeling contest trophys many years ago. I may dig one out and use it on the layout just as a rememberence.

Small world, I have one of those trophies too. Dark blue ACF hopper with a Missouri state outline logo. Must have been in the mid 1980s I got that trophy, now where could it be? I thought that was pretty cool to have a car as part of the trophy. I wanted one of those Springfield trophies with the Frisco yellow PD box on it but never got one. I always thought the Springfield trophies with the slice of rail were the best.

I have several of the Springfield Trophies of which you speak. I think the coolest Springfield trophies wer the one's with the bronze frogs on them. Most of my trophies (200+)are boxed up. I used to be a contest junkie.

You know I think I have one of those bronze frog trophies too (usually only one and usually 3rd place). I too am a recovering contest junkie.

I never paid a lot of attention to the modeling contests, but I have have noticed that some entries in the shows I've been to (Kansas, Missouri & Oklahoma), that some models just appear to be taken out of the box a laid on the table without any extra work or added detailing?? Especially a model representing a whole train like an engine and several cars. What are the usual rules for a modeling contest? How much has to actually be "modeled?"

    Thanks, Tom

    Tom -

I generally avoid these model contests as there usually are no rules. It's usually a simple popular vote, which is fine, but I've had models I did a lot of work on lose to a model straight out of the Overland or Hallmark box. But, no complaints - we are here to have fun.

One contest I have always enjoyed - because it is so full of Frisco models - is the one in Springfield each April. I've entered something each time I have attended (five times I think) and have been fortunate to win second place a few times plus Best Diesel twice - for E8 SLSF 2006 last year, plus for U30b SLSF 835 in 1981 (Jeez - was it really that long ago?).

Agree with Rick - the "slice of rail" trophies were the best ever. I received one for 835. I was told that was real Frisco rail. It still hangs on my wall, plus 835 still sits in a primo place on my shelves.

The Springfield meet (now OMRA) is always fun, and is a chance to see old friends. I'm very sorry I had to miss it this year (having a new granddaughter outranked it!)

I totally forgot about the slice of rail trophies. I have a few of those myself. I wish I had a big enough wall to hang a few of my trophies from but alas that will have to wait until I get a bigger wall. Oh well having a layout to play with is much more fun than building contest models. Yes I called it playing and that is what you do when you enter your second childhood!
Ol Bob Oh who is getting more childish each day!!!!!

My car wasn't a trophy, but a gift from one of the members (Chuck Ogden, IIRC).
