Hello Frisco Folks. Here are some photographs that I have came across of the Frisco depot in Ft. Smith, AR. Take Care, Rich Ship it on the Frisco! Edit 3/19/2024: Photograph 5 is of the St. Smith Union Station depot. The depot was a joint agency between the Frisco and The Kansas City Southern (KCS) Railroad. MKD
In the late passenger train era, there was a Frisco depot, but in the photograph there is a "Frisco" sign on the Fort Smith Union Station building. What were the passenger depot station arrangements at Fort Smith? Anyone know the particulars? Thanks, Tom G.
The Frisco depot in Fort Smith, AR opened in December 1910. In June 1912 the Frisco moved to the Fort Smith Union Station depot whose major tenant was the Kansas City Southern (KCS). The Union Depot was a stub end depot unlike the run through 1903 Frisco depot. The KCS discontinued connecting train service between the Union Depot and Spiro, OK effective with the timetable August 31, 1941. Passengers were carried in KCS marked buses. Following the floods of 1943 that wiped out much of the Spiro branch the connecting point on the mainline was shifted to Sallisaw, OK which was used until the end of KCS passenger service. The Frisco vacated the huge and empty Union Depot in June 1958. By this time only passenger service was the connecting train from Fort Smith, AR to Monett, MO. The Frisco depot was renovated and continued as the Central Division headquarters .
