For those of you that use Netflix, I have ran across an interesting series.

    http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Ultimate_Railroads_Collection_Disc_1/70098872?trkid=226870

There are six discs, I have only watched the first so far. However, Disc one I found is a very interesting look into the state of railroads and their operations in the 40's & 50's. One episode featured a close look at train operations on the New Haven RR during or shortly after WWII. Another followed a Fast Freight on the B & O. Each of the short films on the disc were filmed in the 40's and 50's, so the image quality isn't modern by any means. Frisco trains do make a couple of colorful, albeit breif, appearences. An E8 (looked like #2015 maybe) and a set of F units pulling a long string of freight cars. Another episode shows a 'Racehorse' in the yard with a KCS E unit slowly eclipsing it.

All in all, it was enjoyable to watch. Some sections do get a little 'preachy' concerning the injustices that the railroad industry faced at the time. But, for someone like myself that is not intimately familiar with R.R. operations in the 40's and 50's, it was educational. Lots of colorful diesels, lots of rolling stock to see, and even a fair bit of steam. It certainly helped frame some ideas for the layout. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in railroading in the mid-20th century.

  2. I've had that in my Q for a month now. It keeps saying short wait... but that wait seems to get longer and longer all the time. I just finished watching Santa Fe mainline memories. It sounded like older days(1940's-1960's) but the entire video is in 1995!!! I was two and I saw all these engines within the last few years. Kinda sad it shows alot of depots and yard offices falling apart. It mentions a few that have been restored though. I like the Kansas City shots.
    Ship it on the Frisco!!!

  4. I'll wait for netflix. To work. We get a dvd everyother day so we come out ahead of rental stores. We only have Sam's Club near here and it is in Fort Smith 20 miles away from the house we only go there once a week if so. I got a Great American Railroads box set from Sam's Club for christmas. It had the last 1522 trip in it. Real nice video it mainly focused on the Santa Fe though.
    Ship it on the Frisco!!!
