Smokey Hill River bridge The following are from my collection. Original collection information provided by Wayne Porter. Photos are from the William A. Woodward collection. Retired from Frisco RR July 26, 1974. At the time of retirement he lived in Arkansas City, Kansas but had worked in Ellsworth. No other details known. Surveying flood damage in 1938, I think the crew is on the south end of the Smokey Hill River bridge. This is not a washout... yet. The causeway bends to the left in the distance. Note the mechanical linkage the first group of men is straddling.

Removing debris from flood in 1957, The photo is taken from the north end (Ellsworth side)of the Smokey Hill River bridge. The causeway bends to the Right in the distance. William Retired from the Frisco RR on July 26, 1974 in Arkansas City, KS. William was a District Gang Foreman in 1965 and a Section laborer in Arkansas City, 1945, Section laborer in Beaumont, 1941. Vantage point is the south bank (looking towards the Ellsworth side)of the Smokey Hill River bridge. Sometime in the past the steel deck was added. note the old pilings in the river bed. What a difference 30 years makes! Also from the same collection. More to come.
