What are my options for dual mode decoders? That is decoders that will work on DCC layouts as well as analog without reprogramming or switching a plug?

Most currently-manufactured motion/light decoders support dual-mode operation. I know for certain that TCS, Digitrax, NCE and Soundtraxx Tsunami decoders will operate dual mode. Most all manufacturers refer to DC mode as analog mode.

In most cases, unless disabled, DC operation is automatic - Atlas' Dual Mode motion/light decoders that come in their locomotives are an exception to this to change, you must move a jumper connector on the decoder board.

A mininum of 5 volts is necessary to wake up sound, and typically about 7.5 volts to initiate locomotive movement.

One word of advice, if you intend to operate on DC, it is highly recommended to use a power pack that produces a well regulated DC output, and that does not pulse the power output or has a switch that can turn that feature off.
