Has anyone had trouble with the drives on their 2nd run (SLSF 2019 & SLSF 2022) Proto 2000 E8's? I put my 2019 (Cavalcade) and 2022 (Champion, renamed from Middleground) in service to pull the passenger train I had set up for the kids at our family reunion this weekend (which was a huge success). Both of the drives had not run for about a year, and both screached like a stuck pig when they ran, one from the front truck and one from the rear truck. I immediately took them out of service, and put the two 1st run E8's on the train, 2016 (Citation) and 2020 (Big Red), which both ran fine. Obviously the two 2nd runs need some lube, probably in the gear train since the noise was coming from the truck area. Anybody else have this problem with the two 2nd runs? Ken
Yes, I have seen it on both of mine and some belonging to others that I have put Tsunami sound in. The areas of concern are the bronze oilite bearings on the worm drives at the top of the truck. I cleaned them good and re-lubricated with plastic-compatible lube.
Thanks Keith. I'll get both of them into the shop and get them fixed. When new, I thought they ran better than the 1st runs. Not so now! Ken
