When covered hoppers started to appear for commodity transportation, it appears that they had circular hatches. Did railroads later on use trough hatches as a standard norm for grain commodity loading as well as other type of commodity loading and retained some of the round hatch for specific non grain type of commodity.
I am trying to incorporate this formality on my layout scheme of operations by putting the covered hoppers to their proper use.
