    Hi All:

I'm drawing a blank trying to find an SLSF roster that also lists early power. Anything from the 1880's into the 'teens would be super. Does anyone have a lead as to where I may find such roster info?

    Thanks in advance!

"Frisco Power" by Joe G. Collias, for sure and probably also "Steam Locomotives Of The Frisco Line" by Lloyd Stagner. Both out of print, but still available here and there from used book dealers. OR your own local library--If not on their shelves, from the inter-library system.

    Well stupid me.

I have Frisco Power... but the title indicates 1903-1953. Plus, there isn't a typical "roster". (i.e. Consective pages listing all classes in one roster.)

Instead, the rosters are scattered throughout the book per chapter/engine type. In addition, if you look close, there are pre-1903 engines listed... just no pictures to speak of.

SOoooo... the data is before me. What isn't before me is scads of pictures of the early Moguls, Consols, Ten Wheelers, etc, still on the roster in 1908.

    Ah well.

For sure, thanks for the memory jog, there, Tom.

I though sure those books had all the stuff, but I've never been much interested except post WW II. I thought Collias had some old photos of 19th century engines?? I would have assumed the rosters were in there too.

    Tom:

Indeed, in the Collias book there are a precious few SLSF locomotives from the late 19th century. Those help. Though I enjoy the any pics of turn of the (19th) century (SLSF) railroading, what would be perfect would be pics of the older 2-6-0's, 2-8-0's, 4-6-0's that were still in service in 1908. Hey, I'm not pickey, am I? :D

    Doug:

THANKS! Downloaded and already took a look-see. Very good!

Steam Locomotives of the Frisco Line by Stagner has an 1899 locomotive roster and "summaries" of steam locomotives purchases since that date. It has a few pages of photos from the 1800's, many of them Baldwin builders photos. Most of the photos are from the late 1930's and up. I'd say it's the best source of EARLY Frisco steam information that I've found.

Frisco Folks by Bain also has a few old photos, some of which are of early accidents on the northern part of the system (Kansas).

Several authors have stated that the early Frisco just wasn't photographed as extensively as a lot of the "better known" railroads.

Attached is perhaps the most complete Frisco Steam Roster that I’ve come across. It came from the FMIG site. Doug can provide insight to its origins.

With regard to Frisco steam photographs from19th century and photographs from the first decade of the 20th century, there is a book called, Rails West by George Abdill. It is the third volume of a series that he started in 1958 and completed in 1960. It was published by Bonanza Books, and still appears on ebay from time to time. I found mine at Spotlight Railroad in KC. Penciled on the jacket is the price, $3.95.

It has a section on the Frisco, and some of the images are from your neck of the woods, Andre.

The photographs include 4-4-0, #31 at Winslow Tunnel, and 4-4-0, #32 at Jensen Tunnel.

    Four builder’s photographs of:

    0-6-0, #2
    4-6-0, #44
    2-8-0, #68
    4-4-0, #65.

Frisco #50 and #32 are shown at the Anthony, KS roundhouse.
Frisco #48, a 4-6-0 is depicted at an unknown location.
Frisco 2234, a 4-4-0, which pulled a T. Roosevelt hunting train is shown at Frederick, OK

A derailed Engine #44 is shown at Sarcoxie, MO.

Frisco mogul, 312, is shown in the flood waters of the Wa****a River, near Cordell, OK (That's interesting....evidently there's some sort of spell checker that prevents vulgar words. W-a-s-h-i-t-a River is the location)

Frisco ten-wheeler, 312, nee 161, with train is shown at Cordell, OK

The text also shows several locomotives from related Frisco roads.

    B,E, & T #2, a 4-4-0, is shown as are pictures of KCOS, #10, 4-4-0, the John I. Blair and KC, Ft S, & M #109, a 4-6-0

  9. There's a 1903 locomotive and rolling stock roster in the Frisco special collection at the Missouri State University library. I have a photocopy, but have not scanned or transcribed it.

Here's Karl's Frisco Steam Roster converted from the txt file to Excel, with corrections for column alignment that will make it easier to read.

    12/14/10:
I have added blue highlighting to every other line for easier readability.

Also check out the book by Don Banwart entitled "Rails, Rivalry and Romance." It is about the railroads of Fort Scott and Bourbon County Kansas and is very large with lots of period pictures.

Keith....thanks for the conversion. It's been on my to do list.

John's suggestion is an excellent one. Barwart's book is a must for any Frisco, MKT and/or MP fan

    Howdy,

Richard Napper enhanced the steam roster posted by Keith to make it easier for reading.

The National Railway Historical Society, I think it was, produced a 1905 roster of all Frisco Steam locomotives, I've got it around here some place. I could scan it and post it if anyone is interested.

    Richard,

I would really appreciate if you would do that. All my steamers are Frisco based and prior to 1920.

    I appreciate it!

    Merry Christmas!

    As a possible cross-reference...

In FMIG Newsletter, Second Section #1 that was published by Dave Lindquist, former SL-SF employee Dan Overbey compiled an Equipment Summary of locomotives by class from 1935 through 1977.

The data is compiled from annual reports, and obviously covers through the demise of Frisco steam. It also includes data on freight cars, passenger cars and work cars.

Andre - I have a complete (I think) 1904 Frisco locomotive diagram book. It does not have a roster in it, but I could make one up and post it if desired.

But ..... it is going to take me a while. I'm swamped right now.

    Ken

ps: Kind of cool - the Frisco's fancy new power at the time was their first Pacific types - SLSF 1000-1009 (Alco) and SLSF 1010-1014 (BLW), both built 1904.

The roster is 1904 and it is too big for me to post it (32MB), so I have sent it on CD to Mike and have asked that he post it. It should be up next week.
