Folks - Found this photo: http://www.usgennet.org/usa/mo/county/scott/gallery/gallery7/ga07-07-g.htm The rail line at the bottom would have been the original "Leachville Subdivision" alignment from Marquette to Leachville, AR via Brooks Jct. Mo. Any Scissorbill Country folk know more about this industry? I checked out Karl's 1925 ETT for the River Division to see if there was a dedicated siding to the N/S of Commerce, but nothing stands out. http://www.frisco.org/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=11269&d=1277333158 Best Regards,
That sure is a far cry from how Commerce looks today! I can't quite figure out where this image was taken exactly. Thanks for posting this.
Chris, They were in business in 1916 according to the Missouri Division of Geological Resources: http://books.google.com/books?id=IijuAAAAMAAJ&pg=RA3-PA37&lpg=RA3-PA37&dq=post+brothers+tile+company&source=bl&ots=5gTCIszrp1&sig=pHd-v8xIcDRyjZpcMv9TJ9_n2k8&hl=en&sa=X&ei=5QBvUNfSE7DXigLOx4HoCg&ved=0CFkQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&q=post%20brothers%20tile%20company&f=false They were looking for men March 23, 1920 in the Southeast Missourian: http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...SsrAAAAIBAJ&sjid=hdMEAAAAIBAJ&pg=6455,3712823 And the business had an ad in the Southeast Missourian on July 19, 1921. http://news.google.com/newspapers?n...CUrAAAAIBAJ&sjid=wtMEAAAAIBAJ&pg=2099,4111273 Your post is the first I had ever heard of the business.
It closed in 1927. See page 11 - http://www.dnr.mo.gov/shpo/nps-nr/04001575.pdf From another DNR listing, the plant was "just north of Commerce . . "
Excellent detective work, Keith and Robert. Looks like I'd need to consider backdating my modeling efforts, or fudging history a bit for the sake of modeler's license! I'd noticed that present-day aerials of Commerce show a larger clearing to the north of town adjacent to the abandoned roadbed. Seems like this might have been the place. Best Regards,
