    Hi Frisco Folks,

Here are some photos of the old Frisco depot in Cherryvale, Kansas.

    Take care,

    Rich

    Ship it on the Frisco!

Edit 3/22/2024: Photograph 1 Track in the lower center foreground to the upper right is the Frisco's Carthage Subdivision. The track running from right to left across the image is the the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) Fourth District from Chanute, KS to Tulsa, OK.

    View looking west southwest.

Photograph 2 Note the Frisco train order (TO) signal extending from the lower roof in front of the upper story depot copula.

The Frisco's Carthage Subdivision runs from left to right to the north of the depot. The track on the left is the Santa Fe's Fourth District looking south toward Tulsa, Oklahoma.

    View looking south southwest.

Do you have the map for the north end of Cherryvale, KS where the line crosses the ATSF?

Edit 3/22/2024: The Frisco and Santa Fe diamond crossing at the depot shows in the 1917 Sanborn map in the post above. Note the inset in the upper left hand corner of the map.

There was also a second diamond crossing just to the east of the diamond shown. The other diamond crossing was the Frisco's Parson Subdivision crossing the Frisco Carthage Subdivision.

The east crossing ended in a small yard parallel to the Santa Fe main that served several businesses on the east side of town.

On that map it also shows the separate Frisco freight house that sat to the west of the passenger depot.

This is as close as I could get, they did not do the very top of the town. :)

    Sorry,

    RRG65

Edit 3/22/2024: On the Sanborn overview index map of Cherryville, KS note the two Frisco routes.

Running east to west is the Frisco Carthage Subdivision. Running north to south is the Frisco Parsons Subdivision.

The Parsons Subdivision is adjacent and parallel to the east of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) Railway. The Santa Fe route is their Fourth District.

The route diverging to the west at the bottom of the map is the Santa Fe's route to Wellington, KS. This line through southern Kansas closely paralleled the Kansas and Oklahoma state line.

Please see the following link for a trackside view of the depot at Cherryville, KS.

    http://www.tristatemodelrailroaders.com/pics/main.php?g2_itemId=34&g2_imageViewsIndex=1 (9/9/1978)

The depot's agent or operator bay was in the northeast corner of the "L" shaped structure. The depot sat on the southwest quadrant of the diamond crossing of the SLSF and ATSF. The Frisco track ran on the north side and the Santa Fe ran on the east side of the depot.

The depot was constructed in 1906. This depot was originally a joint agency between the Frisco and Santa Fe until the latter constructed it own depot a few hundred yards down the street. The Frisco closed this agency in the 1970s. Unfortunately this depot was dismantled in 1983.

The depot was on the Carthage Subdivision at mile post 387.0. The depot had been a train order office into the 1970s. In the photograph please note the gates, one either side, that protected the diamond crossing of the Frisco and the ATSF. This view is looking to the southwest.

In the satellite view below please note the former Frisco right of way that is the the east pf the Santa Fe tracks and curves off the the northeast. At one time Cherryvale was also the end of the line station on the Frisco's Parsons Subdivision. The Frisco at one time had a small yard on the southeast quadrant of the SLSF and ATSF crossing and served local industries east of the depot, south of the Carthage Subdivision.

    Please see http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sou...1526,-95.55081&spn=0.004815,0.008068&t=h&z=17

The depot address was 425 North Depot Street.

The former 1910 ATSF county seat style brick depot still stands to the south of this location. The Santa Fe depot is located at 123 North Depot Street.

Please see the following link for additional information on the town's railroads: http://www.leatherockhotel.com/railhist.htm.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

In the satellite view you will notice the Leatherock Hotel.

It is the Home of the Cherry Valley Model Railroad Club. The group is in the process of building a new model railroad which includes Cherryvale, KS.

The hotel is a Bed and Breakfast and will have a Railroad Museum associated with it in the future. Presently the hotel has an old Plymouth switcher setting in the front yard.

The hotel also has the historic Santa Fe camera car ATSF 30 located about 2 blocks south near the Santa Fe Cherryville depot.

    Bob,

    Thank you for the update.

The last time I was in Cherryvale, KS the owners were just starting the renovation on the old hotel. If you look at the bottom of the link with all the information on the railroads of Cherryvale you will see the page is posted by the hotel bed and breakfast / suites. It also includes the address, the owner's name and phone number.

Also, the model railroad club was in the Santa Fe depot.

Do you know who currently occupies the depot?

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

The South Kansas and Oklahoma (SK&O) Railroad is using it.

The freight room where the Model Railroad Club was is now a crew room.

I believe the depot will be 100 years old this year but I am not 100% sure of the date.

    Bob,

    Thank you for reply.

The centennial of the station's opening is June 2, 2010.

This year has several centennial celebrations related to my favorite areas of interest. The Boy Scouts of America also turned 100 on 2/8/2010.

It sure is great to have such nice friends who are always willing to share information.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
