Does anybody know what happened to the window facing of the Chaffee General Office that had the air gauge stuck into it from the 1957 tornado. My dad always wanted that board .... The window was on the top floor and I think that air gauge stayed there until the building came down...
Just stumbled across this post. Tim Cannon or others, any thoughts? I'd always understood that the air gauge was embedded into the depot and not the division office building. Even though I remember each building while being demolished, I never witnessed the legendary gauge. Best Regards,
Yup, I saw it. It was in a window facing of the General Office building. It was there up to the day they tore the building down. There was a Saveway gas station across the street that was demolished by the 1940 tornado. Drove that sucker in at least two inches! That's the freight house on the left and the general office building was across the street facing the gas station.
Great photo, Tim. Never seen this one and didn't realize the filling station was there. I only remember the old freight house foundation/steps and the grassy lot between it and the Elks lodge. I also apparently had the wrong tornado. Did they just raze the remainder of the freight house after 1940? Seems that LCL freight was already diminishing by this time due to truck competition. Best Regards,
