I promised Mark I would make it to Lost Mountain to photograph this caboose. The result is not what I had hoped for.

I remember this caboose as a little boy. My Dad told me that it was purchased by a couple of St. Louis area physicians, transported to Cook Station on the Salem Branch by train, then set off on the siding. It was then loaded onto a low-boy trailer and transported to Lost Mountain ranch for private display. It was wood (obviously) and had an off-set cupola.

I visited it a few years ago, and it was still intact, but slowly rotting away. I did not expect to find it in this condition. This has to be intentional, as there was no gas or electric to the caboose and nothing else burned around it.

No one was home at Lost Mountain Ranch this evening. On my next visit, I am going to ask them for the pot-bellied stove for donation to the Crawford County Historical Society.

Ask for the brake valve/whistle too. There should be one on each end; they make a nice collectable.

    Re: Remains of 752

Pat, I sadly expect your hunch may be correct. Did you get any details as to whether the fire is being investigated for cause & origin?

As much as my memory recalls, the old wooden caboose at "Frisco Park" in Chaffee, MO looked much the same way after vandals torched it in the mid-1970s.

For what it's worth, your photo of the end (1126) shows some good detail. Thanks for posting.

    Best Regards,

Thanks Chris. I don't believe that the fire is currently being investigated. It was in such a delapidated condition the last time that I seen that I wouldn't be surprised if the owner did it himself. I don't understand why someone would want something like that, and then not take care of it.

I've been in contact with some people in the area, and have learned that the current owner of Lost Mountain Ranch is usually only out on the weekends. My next weekend off will be Memorial Day weekend, so I will try to make it down there again and see if I can speak with someone about getting a few items of memorabila from it, such as the brake valves, brake wheels, and of course the stove. I would like to have one set of steps for myself. My four-year old son has a platform that my Dad built for him so he could watch our HO scale trains in the garage. The steps would look nice setting in front of the platform.

I remember this caboose being a deep shade of red. Any ideas what type of paint would be a good match for it?
