This is one of the Frisco manufactured wood cabooses originally intended for main line service. This car was equipped with a steel underframe and cupola with vertical sides. Note the chest height horizontal bar on the end railing. This was a standard safety feature of Frisco caboose end rails to help reduce the possibility of buff and draft (a/k/a slack) action from sending crewmen over the rails and onto the tracks.

These cars were gradually demoted to local service upon delivery of the all steel extended or wide vision cabooses (200-274) in 1957. In 1968 the railroad installed a new computer system that necessitated renumbering its cabooses by adding 1000 to the car number.

This was done to prevent conflicts with other equipment (locomotives) so each had a unique number. In this case it appears there may have been a conflicting number so a totally new number was assigned.

The car is located adjacent to the main line tracks of the Willow Springs Subdivision. The car is sitting north of the tracks very near the former depot site location. The area is known as Earl Shipley Park. It is south of downtown near the intersections of W. 1st St. and N. Center St.

The location address is 100 W. 1st St., Willow Springs, MO.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
