The caboose was constructed in 1927 by American car and Foundry (ACF) for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. On that line the caboose was numbered ATSF 1601. This is one of the former Santa Fe 1600 cabooses.

The Frisco acquired this caboose 9/1969 and several others from the Santa Fe in the late 1960s to replace its older wood side cabooses. This caboose was designated for local service.

The caboose is located in a city park. The park is located at the intersection of County Road 14 and County Road 17. The caboose sits near the southwest quadrant of the "T" shaped intersection.

The location address is 13421 Alabama State Highway 17, Gibbertown, AL.

    Mark,
Are you positive this is the SLSF #1100? I have photos of the 1100 that show it with cupola bracing (like the 1102 at the West Florida Railroad Museum in Milton, FL). Has anyone been able to verify the road number on this caboose? This this THE 1100 or just a 1100 series caboose?

    Mike,

Thank you for the question and observation.

I believe the information provided is accurate. I did check 3 source records before I posted the information. I want to provide accurate information and the better the input the better the result.

If anyone has more accurate information on this or any other caboose's identity and history, please speak up. My goal is current, accurate information.

Cabooses in particular and some depots have been moving around. The trails of custody, locations and identity have been difficult to follow. Tracking Frisco cabooses can be especially frustrating. Company and subsequent records have not been the best, then when coupled to new owners, repainting, ownership changes, physical relocation, etc it becomes even more of a challenge.

Often even the current owners are of little help. Some have not even known what railroad the equipment represented. Others knew the railroad, but could not provide prior number, lettering or chain of custody information. There is also an issue with faux equipment that is painted as if it were Frisco or Frisco equipment painted as if it were for another line.

I have been working on a spreadsheet of existing structures and equipment to share so anyone can easily find Frisco stuff on their travels. The good news is the more we look the more we have found! Eventually it would be great if we can get the proper restorations, paint and history on Frisco items.

I am actively soliciting help including photographs, measurements and other information from anyone willing to assist.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Mark,
I downloaded all the available photos of this caboose and compared it with the A.W. McBride photo. There are some welded patches on the right side that do not appear on the Gilberton caboose. Also, notice the cupola windows differences.
