Caboose End Of Train Markers Or Reflectors - Inquiry

When I was working for the Frisco, we used one of the former Santa Fe cabooses between Oklahoma City and Tulsa on the Oklahoma Subdivision.

We never had markers to hang, but when I caught one of the through freights, there were markers on all 4 corners of the caboose.

What rule allowed us to not display markers on the local?

Rule 19 was amended with System ETT, Number 1, effective October 17, 1971, page 46 as follows:
A reflectorized marker showing red to the rear may be used by day or by night in lieu marker lamps.

    Karl,

    Thanks for the information.

But I do not recall anything red showing to the rear.

There were those 2 white diamonds on either side of the door showing to the rear, but I do not know if they were reflectorized.

The amended rule 19 does not refer to the yellow diamonds. The amendment specifically mentions the color red. The Frisco placed a square of red 3M Scotchlite at the peak of the car body roof eve on each end of the caboose. These reflectors served as the markers as described in amended rule 19.

The caboose second from the left in this link has the red "marker".

The degree to which these red Scotchlite plates were maintained is a topic for another discussion.

That's a great pic. Love the old 1100 series cabooses.

Seems like forever since we were young, doesn't it?

    LOL!

I am not in this photo, but I did have hair like that in the 1970's. LOL

    LOL!

Lots of hair is squandered on youth.

Where is it when we truly need it??

Oh wait, it starts growing on my back, out of my ears, and in my nose!

Hm. I guess it merely relocates.

Yup. I get to thinking back during those times I've worked the ground and, boy howdy, I view myself as having been quite the humdinger of a switchman.

Then I'll get to operating on my Ozark Sub layout, switchin' a town and glowing in my euphoria at what a whiz bang job I'm doing... only to see something I'd forgot... and now I have umpteen additional moves because of it!

Typically I mutter something like "what a moron", and ego deflated, I set about fixing my oversight.

    Sheesh!
