Just finished bolting the last L-Grider supports to the wall and loaded module 08 on top of the supports.

Next step is to glue insulation foam, draw the tracks, install roadbed and track.
    Then run trains!!!

Looking good Joe! Are you going to add some cross braces to the legs for stability?

Dale, I'm thinking about using heavy duty shelf brackets and removing the legs. If I go with the legs, I'll definitely add cross braces.

The past couple of days, decided to take a break from the layout for life's other challenges. I will cut some 7 or 8in. long 1x2in. boards to use one on each end of the modules. These will be used to bolt the modules together. A piece of Masonite will also added to the module's end. After that I will clamp two modules together and match drill two 1/4in. holes for 1/4in. bolts.

Just remember with brackets, you end up with many holes in the drywall.....

Yes, will patch those when I'm done. Don't want to make the landlord mad. We don't plan on moving very soon, hope to stay here for a long time, it's a lot quieter than the previous address.

IMG_20180527_002204.jpg IMG_20180527_002306.jpg Yesterday eerll I started installing the blocks that I described above. Only one block was installed because I had problems it. I need a bar clamp, the block kept separating from the module. I have three in our storage unit, will get them tomorrow morning. After I finished with the blocks will match drill and install the bolts. Then I'll be ready to draw the tracks, attach the road bed and install tracks. Run Trains.i

    Hey Joe,

If you drill pilot holes slightly larger than the screws through the blocks, you should be able to attach them without having to use a bar clamp. Also, the chance of splitting the block is pretty nil.

    Take care,
    Dale

Dale, that's what I have been doing. I drill a 1/4in. holes for the drywall screws and match drilled bolt holes. I have been busy with bolting the modules together, now have modules 03 thru 07 done.

Yesterday afternoon I cut one foot off of module 06 because it won't fit. Also cut some 1/4in. Birch plywood to compensate for the difference between 3/4in and 1in. insulation foam.

Does anyone know where to buy 1in. and 2in. foam in the Tulsa area?

You should be able to get it at Home Depot in smaller sheets in the insulation department. 2’x2’ and 2’x4’ pieces.

  13. Joe they should have it, but if not it looks like Tulsa has a Whitecap/HD supply which should have it. Ours do around here at least.
    It’s looking good so far.

This morning I attached wood blocks to modules 09, 10 and 11. Just have modules 01, 02 and 08 left to do.

Will draw tracks and start installing roadbed tomorrow. I found some more Peco code 80 track in our storage unit, eleven pieces. All in all it's been a good day!

Joe, I’m jealous. I’ve somehow lost my zest for railroad modeling. I’ve got to get in touch with my passion for my layout and get busy. Your build thread is inspiring.

Thank you Jim, I plan on taking photos as I go and explain what I'm doing. If anyone has any questions please let me know. I've had a lot of experience building a layout and I've learned a lot from you guys. Our website has a lot of talented people!

Oh, I almost forgot, went to Home Depot and Lowe's this morning and found the one inch blue foam for $16 at Lowe's. Also found two inche foam for &37 at Home Depot, both stores are right next to each other on 71st. and US169 in Tulsa.

I want you to see how I match drill the holes for bolts, in the aircraft industry it's called a Porkchop. It is comprised of five gears, an input shaft that goes into the drill motor and output shaft with a 1/4in. threaded collet with a 1/4in. drill bit. The gearbox doesn't increase or decrease the speed of the bit, it does offset the drill bit by 2 3/8in. It makes drilling holes easier in tight spaces. Also have a 1/4in. mini chuck, only use it for extra special situations because it is on the fragile side. The mini chuck will hold 1/4in. drill bits and smaller.

I went to Lowe's and bought a sheet of 1in. insulation foam and a sheet of Masonite. Tonight I'm going to cut the Masonite for the end plates and cut the foam to finish the modules required. Modules 04, 05, 06 and 07 have 1in. foam, need to add foam to all of the others.

Just finished the process of gluing one inch blue foam, using caulking as glue, on the modules that needed more foam, modules 01, 02, 03, 09, 10 and 11. I used a credit card size piece of plastic as a spreader for the caulking and toothpicks to keep the foam in alignment. Plan on cutting Masonite for the end plates sometime Sunday afternoon.
