Could Ken of someone else please identify which Detail Associates (or any other detail parts company for that matter) plow casting to put on the front of my Atlas B30-7's?

Bob - I'd suggest the Details West plow pilot, their part number PL-130.

    Wow!

That took a whopping 14 minutes! That's what makes this site so valuable and special.

    Thanks Ken.

Let me piggyback onto this thread and offer my thanks as well. A quick search for this answer here saved me lots of time and trouble. One of these parts is now on its way to me.

I was so close to thinking I was going to have to 3D print this thing!

Yessir, the PL 130 is a chunk of metal in HO, it has worked very well for me Ryan. I have boat load of these I think the SL-SF used these on both ends of the loco. Let me know if you need a couple.
If a guy wanted to make a 3D version you might consider the top of the pilot as open for the hoses as pictured.

    Please carry on my friends.

Other than the closed top, is the part dimensionally accurate? It won't take much effort to make a 3D model with openings for the hoses if I can use the DW part to take off measurements.

  8. Having an open version would be nice Ryan. LMK if you decide to and I would be up for buying some from your shapeway store. Or direct..?

I think they are accurate Ryan. Maybe someone else can opine, about same.

If they aren't perfectly exact, I don't think anyone would fuss, especially if we could get them in material that is easier to work with.

I'll get to work as soon as the part arrives. I'll probably put four to six of them in a group. I'll post a link as soon as it's ready.

I made a model of the plow that's similar to the Details West part with two differences: the holes for the air hoses go all the way through and the ends are filled in and beveled like the vast majority of prototypes I looked at. It is pricey for six parts, especially if you have access to the Details West part (I don't except through ebay or online stores).

Ryan, is there a way that they can be laid out so that you more than six on one "sprue"?

Yes. How many would you like on there?

    Keith,

I had a few minutes before I have to leave. I made 6, 12, 18 and 24 count versions. I also hollowed the base model a little better which helped knock down the price a bit. There is a fee of $5 per part for this material, so the actual material volume cost is on top of that. That means that the more parts I add (up to the limits of the printer) the lower the cost is per part. The per part breakdown is as follows:

    6 count: $2.30 per part
    12 count: $1.85 per part
    18 count: $1.64 per part
    24 count: $1.54 per part

I can't seem to get it as low as the Details West part at $1.25, but it's much closer when purchased in quantity.

My 24 came today. I REALLY like them; they will be much easier to install than the Details West Rock Pilots and they have a very nice finish that will take paint very well. Thank you so very much Ryan! These are necessity for the GE units.

I'm glad you like them. I got an order of six of the first solid version I made. I put a pair on my B30-7 and they look really good. I need to finish the chassis so I can put it all together.

    Details West version:

    3D printed version:

Both ends now have the 3D printed parts attached.
