I agree with Ten Wheeler. I have a home layout that's roughly 30' x 30', and the 2-10-0 I bought couple of years ago is plenty. Those articulated steam engines are cools, but even on the 30" minimum radius I have, they still don't look right. Like fronting a 10-12 car train with two SD70s.

I think the only thing I may do is to put a Precision Scale Frisco number plate over the factor one.

I also wish Athearn would finish what they started and convert the rest of the old MDC line to RTR.

If I needed another one I wouldn’t hesitate to get it and then modify it to my heart’s content. I always use Tsunami decoders ( thanks Keith) because of their unparalleled easy CV customization choices.
Hell, I might get one for the heck of it and see what I can make of it.

Other than the dome placement, it could be convincing to all but the rivet counters. Oil bunker is different.
Go with a coonskin number plate and have fun with it.

The bell and whistle/pop valves are crudely molded onto the boiler shell. I would replace them except the boiler shell is certainly a “zamac” zinc alloy, almost impossible to drill. I know, I tried to superdetail at least three different zamac engines back in the 60s.

Might be time to break out the Dremel tool and razor saw.:)

Zamac alloy is Model Railroad kryptonite. I can’t say how many drill bits I broke in the past trying to drill such boiler shells.

It is a pdf file that has the new model overlaid with the profile of the prototype SLSF #94.
