Just received 3 variations of the Genesis Frisco GP7. Really was expecting a much brighter yellow. I'm kind of disappointed.
As far as operation, one runs really sweet, one is OK, and another one needs something.

John, there has been much discussion about the color; most wanted a more gold-looking yellow color that reflects what we see in the pictures in the Frisco Archive.

I got mine yesterday...As for the yellow I think it's just like the red on cabooses, it depends how you look at...However the yellow does look a little bit darker than I remember...I'd give them a A, have to deduct some points because the stacks are too high...Roger

If one's only "in the flesh" exposure to the Frisco's black and yellow stripe engines has been models with Oddballs Decals... those decals were way too "lemon" yellow.

I'm anxious to see one of my friend's Genesis GP7's first hand once they begin to receive them. From what I can see in pictures of them, they look awfully nice.

Long time since I train watched Frisco in Ft. Worth. My memory places the yellow on my P2K FA1/FB1 Frisco set as a match. Also, "Frisco in Color" by Marre and Sommers shows a much brighter yellow on everything.
I feel as if I'm complaining too much... my models ARE really stunning as to overall looks. I think I'm actually getting used to the color. Weathering should help. (Hmm... I wonder if you can "paint" with Pan Pastels???)

Yes, you can. It'll need to have some tooth if a gloss finish is present.

I had/have an order in to Spring Creek for these. I hope they haven't forgotten,

Mine are not here yet, but I'm sure they have lots of them to send so it may be another week or so.

I talked with Spring Creek last week. They said they expect their Genesis Frisco GP7's shortly, probably early this coming week.

Great info. I have one coming through them too. Any pictures from the Frisco Nation?

Here's my FA1 painted like a real Frisco engine:

I said I was getting used to the GP7 color but digging out the Alco and putting them together just blows the whole effect. I'm back to being really disappointed.

I respect that you painted your FA1. And will agree that your FA1 is very close to the color that appears in photos of the all FA1s that I have looked at and compared on my color-corrected computer monitor. However the GP7 model from Athearn is pretty much spot-on in color compared to all the photos I have looked at.

    Well, I guess I can't argue 'cause I'm speechless.

With regard to the color debate, here is what I have noticed from looking at photos:
Coming from the factory, the yellow was much brighter, like the P2K FA's. Later on when the units were repainted in the frisco shops, the paint used then was the darker, more gold looking yellow. These models are supposed to represent the units later in their life cycle (ie the 5 chime horn and the spark arrestors), so to me, the darker yellow was the correct choice by Athearn.
Other factor to consider, does different camera technology make a difference in the outcome of the picture?

Film brand would have had an effect, but the color difference tended mostly to affect blues and reds, but not to a great degree.
Time of day would have an effect, but the effect would be apparent across the color spectrum.
Camera technology would not be an issue with film photography, digital photography can have an effect if the camera's white balance is off.
All in all, the photos in the archive span the early production through the later revisions, all film shots.

The p2k Alco is factory paint. Sorry if I gave the wrong impression.
As for prototype repaints, refer to "Frisco in Color", Marre and Sommers, bottom photo and caption, pg 72.
My photos were taken with the same camera, identical lighting. I would judge the color in my photos as extremely close for each model, and certainly close enough for a color comparison.
I have looked at the paint with a magnifying glass. It appears much more yellow than with the naked eye. I'm thinking now that Athearn has the correct color, applied too thinly.

Spring Creek Model Trains contacted me today about my pre-order. Payment made, 3 GP7s supposed to ship tomorrow. Its a very bright spot on this cold and rainy day.

Got mine today, it's rerailed and ready for action. I can already see they are going to be a regular on my pike. The color looks great, but I might dirty it up just to make everyone happy. Ha Ha.

My 579, 594, 612, 617 and MoP 165 all arrived today. I am very pleased. I have already switched out the speakers for my Sweet Sound Low/Long Speakers. There is ample room then for Current Keepers.
