    Arkansas City, KS, 1969.

Edit 4/4/2024: Photograph 1 SLSF 8 General Electric (GE) 44-ton switch engine. West leg of the wye is beyond the gray maintenance of way shed to the right of the engine house. West Yard tracks are to the right. View looking west northwest.

Photograph 2 The locomotive is fitted with a headlight number board visor. The visor has glass sides with the engine number that glow when the headlight is illuminated. Note the ventilation copulas on top of the engine house and mechanical department supply shed. View looking west southwest.

West Yard had 4 tracks in addition to the Beaumont Subdivision mail line. From the yard the train crews could serve the industries along the mill run creek track, the west industries served off the wye tail track the depot freight room, ramp and house / team track.

Industries in town directly served by the railroad included bulk oil dealers, grain elevators, milling companies, an ice house / cold storage warehouse, oil refineries, oil field or well supply companies and river sand loading.

Additional business included the interchanges with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF), Midland Valley (MV) and Missouri Pacific (MP).

    Added photographs and yard narrative.

1925 Sanborn map of Arkansas City depot and engine house. :)

Edit 4/4/2024: The Sanborn map does not show the engine house. The Arkansas City depot, MP 514.7, is north of West Yard, MP 515.0. The engine house was at the yard within the wye to industrial trackage, connections to the southeast with the Missouri Pacific (MP) Railroad and Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (ATSF) Railway.

  3. I am working on a railroad exhibit at the Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum.

Do you mind if I use any of your photos for the Frisco area?

There is not much here on the Frisco.

    Thanks!
