Had a Hallmark 1306 2-8-0 sitting waiting for some attention and decided to work it over and make 1335 from it. New doghouse, moved the bell to smokebox front, big sand dome and other detail. Right now I'm tweaking the Tsunami 2 to my liking. 1335L34.jpg 1335LBS.jpg 1335LR34.jpg 1335R34.jpg 1335RF34.jpg

I use nothing but chalk for weathering. Its reversible and easy to do. I don't overcoat it, so later if I decide to clean it up I can. The weathering shows up more in this light than it actually does in person.

I have told Don in the past that I think his models actually look better than the real thing. They are gems, true art!

Don, another work of art! A question: Are tenders always assigned to that same locomotive? Say for example the tender needed to be shopped for mechanical problem, will they take the locomotive out as well, or find a replacement tender even though the numbers do not match.

I would think a tender swap would have been possible. I've seen photos of some smaller engines with the number changed on the tender.

As usual, it's fabulous, Don. Don't know why it leaps out at me, but the tread on the walkway and the steps on the boiler is especially nice.

    Best Regards,

Great job, Don!!! Your locomotives are very realistic. How many do you have that you built and do you have more in work?

I just wish I didnt need to afix my weathering chalks with clear coats. But my chalks disappear from just the slightest handling if it isnt clear coated.. I think once in a while the clear coat messes up a good weathering job. Don's just seem to be so perfect to my eyes. I can smell the oils, hear air pumps and dyno just looking at it. I never get tired of looking at his modeling efforts.

Geez, I would have to go back and research this. I recently thinned the roster by about 12 engines because I was at the point where Newburg looked like the funeral train days of engines going to Granite City. Couple that with the fact that I'm getting up there and I decided it was time to downsize a little. Right now, I'm putting the 1621 back together after detailing and painting. I still have a couple of engines to work on in my senility. One of the 1015-1039 4-6-2s and a mostly scratchbuilt 1240. This 105 degree weather makes the basement very attractive. I wish I had the energy to clean the basement out. It looks like a hoarder lives here.
I need to go on a selling spree for books and brass parts. Magazines are another item. I have to find one of those "round tuits" somewhere. I just sold a switchlight and two marker lights a few weeks ago. Still more to go.

  19. I'm with you Tom. I like chalk pastels look but my stuff gets handled too much for them to hold up without sealing. Sealing kills the colors.
They look great on yours Don.
