    Ken,
You don't ask Tom how many cars are on that train. You just watch the crossing gate go down, you just know it will be awhile when the end of it goes by. Just like the real ones!

Ha, you're right! I was just curious. Tom not only runs trains that look very prototypical, he has them running with prototypical car counts!

I still get excited to see the modeled Gyralite effect. Very nice, Tom. The units sitting next to the office/depot building sure remind me of seeing the off-duty O/W diesels sitting next to the Chaffee depot down the street from my house. Very evocative for me, personally.

I'd say the new software looks good enough for our purposes. I'm sure you'll want to throw as many videos on here as you can in order to maximize your return on investment. :)

    Best Regards,

I have been given a lot of stuff from people in the hobby over the years, and have made some really good friends along the way. One in particulars name was David Morris, he lived to be 94 years old and boy did he live and love life, he was always quick witted and full of joy, just a great guy, he has a son named Brian Morris who is also a good friend and modeler. When David passed, the MRR they built had to be torn down the house sold and all that goes with that time. Well I ended up with several very nice scratch built buildings and Brian even gave me some huge rock castings from their MRR. Now bear in mind I already had the scenery base down so it will require surgery to install these big castings. the resin paper scenery method makes this endeavor relatively easy as all I had to do was take a razor knife, cut into the scenic shell, place the mold in glue in place, and well you will see below.
Below is the first installation of rock mold from David and Brian's MRR. I first cut along the bottom of the casting with a band saw, then kind of set the casting into the cut, then as you can see, I used a couple of those long glue sticks run thru an hot glue gun, trying to glue it in place. Then cardboard webbing, then resin paper hot glued to the webbing, then the seams covered with painter caulk, and then a generous coat of Elmer's carpenters glue; I use it straight out of the bottle no thinning, and the carpenters glue is less likely to weaken with a small amount of water.
Here are some images, I just really like his method of weathering these rock molds, wish I knew how he did it. David was an artist, I mean the kind of artist that painted and sold paintings, some for a lot of money.
This is how it looked before I started.

After Dave's rock molds where installed the webbing and most of the resin paper glued down.

Some sculptamold paint and ground cover and some additional rocks down.

And now some back drops painted, as you can clearly see, I am self taught, and a I am NOT a very good teacher.

    Now some trees.

Some more trees and a cabin now too.

A little more detail for the cabin.

Very nice work, Tom. Isn’t it nice to shift gears from loco detailing to scenery and eventually back to rolling stock? Keeps the hobby fresh.

Very nice work, the cabin is a nice touch. That looks good enough to have snakes this next summer

Well ... that's not a very nice one to have around for sure!

  12. Nice stuff Tom. His castings look great, neat you could work them in and remember a buddy with it. Layout is never quite done is it?

Jim you can keep your friend!

Tom, you did a honorable action by using your friend's castings, looks great. Maybe you should put a rattlesnake near the cabin.

A six-foot rattler will be just over 13/16" x 0.oo3" wide in HO scale; Probably not beyond the skill of many in the group. I wonder if Shapeways has them.... :)

Tom, great scenery work as usual. Locally a lot of the guys use a concoction we called Achie Goop to use as basic ground cover.

Thanks guys for all the kind words and encouragement,
Jim. Your exactly right that is what makes this hobby so right for me, we get to take part in so many aspects during the build of a layout big or small, and Locos and rolling stock too!! That's one thing I don't miss about be back in Texas, is those rattle snakes, man we killed the daylights out of those things, don't know how none of us 4 boys growing up never got bit by one. That's a Copper head in the photo isn't it? But I agree you can keep him back there.

    Thanks William. I appreciate it.

I agree Sherrel- I hate them snakes.

Thanks Steve- Your right I ain't ever gonna be done with this.....

Thanks Joe- Every time I look at the scene, it reminds me of David, Brian gets a kick out of it too, he gets to remember his dad.

Thanks George- Hmm thinking a pieces of really thin soldering wire might do the trick, flatten out the head a bit, tapper the tail and walla, gonna have a heck of a time painting those little diamonds on his back tho. I will have to control my urge to cut its head off with a shovel or shoot it with a shotgun.

Thanks Keith- I gonna give that a try sounds like a great approach, to put on the resin paper or to patch with.

DC8DBE06-7784-49D7-A57D-82E1E4DE3518.jpeg Hell, we’ve got rattlers here as well. Timber rattlers aren’t very aggressive but I wouldn’t want to step on one.

Here I am not trying to cut its head off with a shovel. Vicki has made sure the shotgun has been put away. My monitor should be good for the evening. But seriously those are some healthy looking snakes, lots of food for them around there looks like. I have only seen a couple timber rattlers here, both from the cab.

This is the first time I have put together a 4 and then 5 unit QA&P power lashup. Dont know why it has taken me so long. I had the 4 unit set I thought would work, but with 65 buggies and a caboose on the 2.5% had a different plan, I stalled just as my caboose hit the 2.5%o_O. So I adds the 5th unit and away we went. Interesting how the train performed, those Geeps, went to work first slipping a bit then those big SD's dug in, went to work, and the train slowly started and our troubles were over. We sat 10 MT grain cars out at Dougherty, and we really had it made then.
He were are power in the ready tracks 4 units, little did I know.

This car had been in a train, that has been in a staging yard for almost3 years, man I gotta get out there more. A Walthers car. I took a picture of the real car, then made the decal and applied it.
