    Greetings and Felicitations Fellow Travelers,

Short of the many imaginary trips via the caboose at the Monett Municipal Park, the only train I ever rode was at "Steal Your Dollar City". Nonetheless, I'm here to learn new things and try to get some clarification about some "word of mouth" stories I'm heard through the years (some of the sources were fishermen... so I'm somewhat doubtful... haw-haw).

I have a question concerning a place between Monett and Verona called "Globe, MO". You can find it on Mapquest dot com and in the Lawrence Co. Plats found online (circa 1930). I'm told that it was a "fuel and water" stop and am looking for confirmation. Can anyone suggest the best place to post this question? Thanks in advance!

We'll catch you a little further down the line, okay? ;)

Where is the "City of New Orleans"? by Guthrie or Nelson.

Ship It On The Frisco - by The Bottle Rockets, hailing from Festus, MO. Lead singer grew up in Crystal City, and in this song mentions hopping the switcher heading for PPG (the glass plant).

Runner up - Long Train Runnin' by the Doobie Brothers

Thanks for posting the link... that's a great song! I'm still thinking about it but the guitarist seems to be channeling someone... maybe Stevie Ray Vaughan, JJ Cale and Jimi Hendrix all at once?

You know, I almost put 'Long Train Runnin' ' in my list but, as you can see from the Wikipedia list I put a link to above, there are a LOT of songs about trains. ;)
Other notables include 'Catch the A-Train' and 'Night Train' (the Louis Prima version) on the Jazzy side... 'Little Black Train' and 'I've Been Workin' on the Railroad' to represent Traditional... 'Love in Vain' is another Blues great that I love... then progressively harder rock songs like 'Hear My Train a-Commin' ' and 'Crazy Train'! So many greats I know and, like yours, so many greats I've never heard before.

    Thanks for sharing!

"Hey Porter" by Johnny Cash on the Sun record label. I think that was his first record.

Long Train Runnin' by the Doobies. One of my all-time favorite Ozarks highways driving tunes. OH! We also can't forget Chicken Train by The Ozark Mountain Daredevils; supposedly inspired by the Frisco line's Chicken Train from Clinton.

As to your original question - it doesn't look it had any services. All timetables are posted here - http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?forums/timetables.78/

Select an Eastern Division time table, then scroll to Springfield Subdivision. Globe is usually found close to the bottom of the page.

    Bob,

You've exceeded my wildest dreams with such a prompt reply! I've been wondering about this for over a decade now and I'm really stoked (pun intended) about the information you've provided. Thank you so much!

Could you elaborate as to what a station (so-called) without "any services" might consist of? It was suggested to me that the "fuel" (other than water) taken at Globe included wood and/or coal... for a steam engine (I guess). Does that sound plausible and up to what years would such fireboxes still be in use?

Thanks for sharing! I was just re-watching some recollections of contemporaries of Steve Goodman (who wrote 'City of New Orleans' and many others) and Kris Kristofferson laughs at the fact that Johnny turned down the iconic song (Arlo Guthrie made it famous) since he thought he was being typecast as a "train song guy". :p

LOL... I'd forgotten all about 'Chicken Train'. What fun! I have a kind of a family connection with The Daredevils since my mom was good friends with Jackie Gillioz (aka "Jackie Blue") and met them at the Gillioz home in Monett.
    Thanks for your reply!

I guess I shouldn't be surprised to find so many music lovers among train enthusiasts since, on a train, the rhythm is sorta built in? Your Cathedrals submission did surprise me a bit since I wrongly expected the tallest singer in the quartet to be the bass!
    Thanks for entertaining me!

I somehow overlooked your reply, Brad... sorry 'bout that. Wow, you'll see that I just mentioned 'City of New Orleans' in a reply below yours and I listened to a few Woody Guthrie (Arlo's pappy) songs when building the incomplete list for the poll. Steve Goodman (who wrote the song) was such a talent and super-skilled guitarist! We were robbed of a great one when leukemia took him in '84 (I think it was). He was a Chicago boy and a huge Cubs fan and is smiling down on his team this year, eh? :)
Thanks for adding slice of Americana to the list!

As a side-note... with the mention of 'Long Train Runnin' ', I can't think of the Doobie Brothers without thinking of the band of about the same era called Chicago. While I don't find a "train song" by Chicago, I believe their original name was "Chicago Transit Authority"! Ah, those "Six Degrees of Separation" are sometimes many, many fewer? ;)

Wanna hear something to support the theory? There's a game called, "The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon". Kevin Bacon starred in the 1984 film 'Footloose'. The next town south of Monett (my hometown) is called Purdy (which is on the RR line) and they were contacted during the research for the movie since they didn't allow school dances (but that's not even the "link" to support the theory). Kevin Bacon's character in the film moved to the small town from... (you guessed it)... Chicago! This paragraph is an edit and I had no idea of this fact before it occurred to me to check after I made the original post. Crazy ain't it?

"Orange Blossom Special." I could not help it. All those "Lines South" that did not make it to Naples had their influence!

I'm thinking that this song would make a great morning wake-up alarm! Coffee and "pork up in the pan" could hardly give any more energy! Thanks for dropping your favorite in the hat.
