Why don't we "do" Frisco and railroad stuff here and "social media" someplace else!!??

We use social media to promote what we are doing here.

A lot of us don't understand anything about "liking" and how that would advance the agenda of this group. Why Facebook (except to see photos of the new grandbaby) or otherwise get involved in cookies or whatever?

Social media is used in one way or another by virtually every successful web site or community to promote and advance their causes. I have discovered many things through social media that I would not have known about otherwise. Obviously, the Internet evolves and changes and social media is one way that this happens. A lot of growth of any web site or project on the Internet right now will involve social media sites.

We have had several people come to us here at Frisco.org as a result of our Facebook outreach and I am sure that will continue.

As far as pictures of babies, etc., that is not what we are doing here. Many different things happen on Facebook or other social media sites that really can't be compared to each other. Facebook is used for a lot of foolish things and a lot of very worthwhile things. It's just a tool.

The great thing about social media is that it is easily ignored for those that are not interested in it.

Exactly. As long as it is not forced on anyone, what difference does it make to those of us (me included) who are not interested.

If it was not for social media, Facebook, I would not have known about 'Fans of the Rock Island' (thousands of photos) and 'On30 Railroading', and 'Ship it on the Frisco', and 'Railroad Glory Days', and many, many more.

i know I spend too much time looking, but I enjoy it, period.

I think a lot of people hear negative things about Facebook and think that it's all people posting that they have to go to the bathroom, stupid kids games, dumb videos, mindless babble, and so on. I will be one of the first to admit that there is way too much of that on there but it depends who your friends are. People decide they would not like that and are not interested. But, if you have good friends and like good pages then it is great. If your friends are ding dongs then it's not going to be so great.

If someone wanted to join Facebook and "like" about 10 or 15 really good railroad-related pages (or people) then you would see a lot of interesting things every day (and no garbage). There is a lot of wonderful content!

All Facebook is, is an idea; and a great idea it is. It is how people use it that matters. Facebook can be compared to television. There is loads of garbage on TV, but at the same time, if you are watching something you love, then it is great. You don't compare a John Wayne movie with home shopping channels but they are both television.

We are posting good railroad content to Facebook and it will help people that are interested in what we do find us.

Still only 98 two weeks later. The "Frisco Railroad Memories" page is at 188. Neither number is very impressive. Do you know who started the other page? It began May 12, 2013. There is a Frisco mailing list on the rootsweb genealogy site. Only a single post there in all of 2013.

I don't know who started the other page. We will grow the official Frisco.org page with our Frisco Archive postings. :)
