4-8-4 SLSF 4508 4-8-4 SLSF 4508 New locomotive with a westbound freight train on the Lebanon Subdivision near Dixon, MO, MP 134.6. Note the hillside bluff on the north, left side of the image, and downhill to the south, right side, the Meramec River. Frisco company negative.
I was looking at the old photograph I had posted and it looks awfully dark, so here is a reworked one.
Nice photograph! Having not asked the guys I am working with yet, do you know how many of the 4500s were equipped with the C-2 boosters?
Don, I wonder what the occasion was. There is a "suit" standing next to one of the telegraph poles. There is a lot of military equipment on those flats as well. KEB
The Frisco eventually had boosters on all 25 engines. The first 15 were delivered without, but the last ten had them from Baldwin. The railroad installed them on the first series.
Karl, I cannot say for certain, but consider that the 4-8-4 SLSF 4508 still has its original paint and it looks like the hill realignment is brand new. I would guess that this is a construction train moving contractors equipment off the job. Maybe even moving equipment from the Dixon Hill project west to start on the Handcock Hill project that was started once the east side was completed. Just one possibility. Brad
Anyone ever see a photograph of 4-8-4 SLSF 4508? Kind of a rare bird. I cannot recall ever seeing any pictures of it. Tom G.
Tom, The only one I have seen is this one that Don previously posted. That is the lone example that I can find either here or on the Frisco Archives. Wonder why there seems to be a scarcity of photographs for it? http://www.frisco.org/vb/showthread.php?488-4-8-4-4508&highlight=4508 Best Regards,
Sherrel , Assuming you are referring to E8A SLSF 2009, Jet Pilot. There are quite a few pictures kicking around. I know Mike Condren has at least one in his collection, I have at least one each from Lou Marre and Art Johnson, and several more exist. Plus, somebody had a close up of E8A SLSF 2009 posted on eBay some time ago. See the attached picture from that listing. Somehow I think I know why SLSF 2009 is your favorite E-unit! Ken
Here it is in July of 1948 looking pretty fine in Tulsa, OK One of few with a coonskin number plate. J. L. Hoffman photograph. Gordon
Nice photograph Gordon. Never really thought of why the rectangular number plates were predominant on the 4-8-4 Northerns. Thanks for sharing! Best Regards,
VERY neat Gordon! Also see another SLSF 4508 photograph in the Frisco Archive tonight. Without the graphics and just big numbers, those things were brutes! Tom G.
Interesting that 4-8-4 SLSF 4508 in the Frisco Archive picture has the typical 4-8-4 rectangle front number plate. But then in later years in the picture on this thread she is wearing a coonskin number plate. I have to admit, my favorite paint on the 4500s is just all black with the large yellow numbers. I wish Tulsa, OK would have painted 4-8-4 SLSF 4500 all black when they restored her!
The yellow or imitation gold lettering was only on the oil burners 4-8-4 SLSF 4500, 4501, 4502. The original 4500 "passenger" engines. By the way, I think SLSF 4510 was another engine with a coonskin number plate. I have never heard any rhyme or reason why some Frisco engines came with or without the coonskin number plate. Tom G.
