These ten locomotives began life as 1898, Baldwin-built, Vauclain compound 4-6-0's, numbered 139-148. The were renumbered to 539-548 and simpled (with D-valves). During 1922-23, the West Shops converted them to piston valve-equipped 0-6-0's.
