I have a spare Bachmann decapod, number 1630. I’d like to change the road number to 1631 to have a different engine than the others.

Ideally, I would just like to block out the zero wherever numbers appear on the engine and tender and apply the 1. I can leave the cab “Frisco” alone. But I don’t know if available decals are the same size or even the same color tone and how well it would match.

    Therefore, I have two questions.

    1. Would changing one number in the factory painted series match the existing font identically, or would it stand out too much, making it essential to the entire tender.

    2. I really don’t need a whole set of decals for this job. Would anyone have some spare numbers that they would be willing to part with for this little project?

Any response is appreciated. Thank you.

I looked at doing this some time ago. The issue I ran into was matching the black paint to block out the old number/s. And my locos tender numbers measure out to around 2'5" scale feet tall. The K4 decals are 2' Odd Ball has 2'2" and 2'5" Champ are 2'7". It looks like Odd Ball had the closest.

Thank you. Looks like repainting the entire tender and application of an entire new set of numbers will be required.

    The decals “are” white, right?

Standard size was 24" white. Some of the later engines 4200s,4300s, etc had 30". Champs freight set was always wrong

So were Champs MP. But Champs was all we had for many a year. And we loved them. Right now I have several sets of Champs Cotton Belt steam locomotive and I bet they are wrong. But where else are you going to get them?

Hmm. So K4 are correctly sized and the Bachmann factor numbers on the 2-10-0 are a bit to tall. Now I am going to have go and measure all the tender numbers on my locos.

But I just repaint my tender and loco to make sure the black matches under any light conditions.
