Found an interesting tidbit in the May 1915 issue of The Frisco Man from the Springfield-Greene County Library Collection: Engineer Frank Reid, on engine 1251, is one of the lucky ones endowed with the new reverse lever which works by an air pump instead of shoulder muscles. Mr. Reid says it is one of the best things put on an engine, if not the best thing, as it not only saves the engineers trouble, but cuts down considerable maintenance expense.
