    I just bought a Yaesu VX-150 2M hand held, which will also double as a nice scanner. Now all this old dummy has to do is learn how to use it. I've never been on 2 Meters, so I don't know the protocol. Typical manual is not written for old people.

    Back to regular English, No it is not required nowadyas and I have have mixed feelings on that subject. My code speed only got up to around 15 wpm. I passed the Extra Class after they reduced the speed for it to 13wpm. I think the FCC is in cahoots with the Radio companies and got rid of the code so more radios could be sold. Our local club has put a tone on our 2 meter repeater and I can't use it anylonger as all my equipment is too old and doesn't have tone capabilities. I haven't really been active in Ham Radio since April of 2000 when an F3 tornado blew down my tower and all of my outdoor antennas. I have worked 285 countries and have 275 of them confirmed. I worked over a hundred and fifty of them with a G5RV. I had some pretty good Elmers here who taught me the ropes of Dxing. It is alot of fun but expensive.
    73 de N0QXC El Bob Oh.
    PS my code skills are really rusty!

    El Bo Bo, My hats off to you - very good.
    I was very interested when still in school, but never had the money to do anything about it. Later on when I had the $, other things seemed to always fill my plate.
    About the best that I could do was 12-13 words per min.
    Sorry to hear about the storm taking down all your towers. They can be wicked. I remember standing in my back yard in Shawnee and seeing three tornado funnels at one time.
    What constitutes a "confirmed" country.:confused::confused:

    The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Has a Program called DC Century club. Basically one talks to an operator in another country and then exchanges QSL cards. If you participate in the program you collect cards and then send them in to the ARRL to have the validity of the operator checked. If they confirm that the other operator is a valid operator then that country is confirmed. I believe there are around 330 countries in the program. I am not up on it and not a member of the ARRL at the present time. I have too much model railroading to do. Besides I don't have to worry about storms tearing down my antennas any longer.
    Chasing DX is a fascinating and fun part of Ham Radio. During the start of the peak of the last Sunspot Cycle I got on 10 meters and through out my call and spent the next 8 hours straight answering calls from over 100 other countries. It was like I was the rare DX station and I guess for them I was. I have worked many pileups chasing DX over the years but that was the first time that the pileup was chasing me. It made me feel GREAT! Almost as good as winning Best of Show at a Model Railroad meet.
