Hi Patrick All the locos painted QA&P except QA&P GP7'S, are fantasy locos. I model the QA&P As if it never went away, and remains a subsidiary of the Frisco, hence the SLSF sub-lettering on the locos.
Yea, I have seen that image to Paul. I did the 5216 as it had the simplified scheme and a single headlight on the nose, but so did the 5202, dang, coulda, woulda, shoulda LOL.
I’ve thought about a fantasy layout of the Gulf Coast Lines, which sprung from the Frisco, with Frisco participation.
Been working on another MW project for waay to long, This is the 2nd Tichy Crane for me, this time I thought it needed a tender for the crane, not a boom tender, but a water/coal/tool car for the crane. Dr. Condren's site has a couple slivers of images of a tender of sorts, not much to go on, but I dove in anyway. This is a B'man tender that has been rebuilt in about every way. Here it is after a bunch of work. More to come...
What a great transformation! You hit another one out of the park. Always rewarding to repurpose something.
Thanks Jim, Greg and Steve. I need to figure out how to make lump coal for it. Any ideas? Can't buy coal anywhere within 90 miles of here to make my own out of real coal.
Cat litter varnished to seal it, then painted black ===> lump coal ... (?) Just off the top of my head and never tried it. Depending on which one, it may be too big or too small...
[QUOTE="gjslsffan, post: 92579, member: 810" I need to figure out how to make lump coal for it. Any ideas? Can't buy coal anywhere within 90 miles of here to make my own out of real coal.[/QUOTE] If you live near tracks where unit coal trains run, you may be able to find small lumps that have been blown off the hopper cars on the right-of-way. That's how I've found my supply. Rich
I think there is a load behind the house now. When I was working the South pool here we used to load these trains, I took home a bucket of coal dust for loading my coal cars, actually I just sprayed the plaster loads glossy black and sprinkled the coal dust on top, worked pretty good. The other crewmen of course thought I was nuts. Coal loads went down for quite a while, but they are back in a big way. We (BNSF) are pulling some coal trains out of Utah east now. Pretty good trains powered 2X3X2. on 105 loads. You would think finding a few chunks would be easy, but not so much.
Well here is the second Tichy crane for me. I like these kits, lots of pieces, but the molds must be getting old as there is a bit of flash on some sprues. And now the Boom tender, I try to load these up with little details. Also a Tichy car. And Finally a QA&P water car. This was done match some prototype images I have seen. The QA&P had 3 different paint schemes for these tank cars. They frequently hauled potable water for work trains, but their best use was to haul Roaring Springs water to the Coke bottling plant in Paducah TX. They were often seen behind the power, some mistook them for Aux water for the locomotive, but they were not.
Tom there are a couple scenery places that sell coal. Also Woodland Scenic has cinders that are all black. Might work like they are. If you need glossy then I’m sure once fixed in place they could get gloss clear. If all else fails I have coal and could mail a piece for you to smash. We have non stop north bound coal around my house, even crossing my road. But it is very rare to see any out of a car on the ground. Modern sandblasting grit is gloss black and pretty close size wise for what you might want. If you could get that? The wreckers and accompanying cars look great.
Tom, You can also use black sand to simulate coal. Applications include art projects, aquariums, ash tray extinguishing material and other uses. A quick internet search shows quantities are available ranging from 1 to 50 pounds. It can be found in art supply stores, pet shops, hardware stores and janitorial supply stores. Some larger vendors include Hobby Lobby, Petco, PetSmart, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Menards, W W Grainger, Amazon, ebay, etc. There should also be many local vendors in your area. Try asking, looking or searching for key woods including aquarium, aquatic, art, ash tray, beach, craft, decorative, polymeric, silica, terrarium coupled with "sand" and "black". The material can be applied with a bonding agent (glue, paint, etc.) or used as "live" loads in tenders, gondolas, hoppers, etc. Hope this helps. Thanks! Mark
