Long ago there was a thread explaining the different markings of the numberboards on the Ft. Scott locomotives. It seems the thread was lost in the website transition a few years back.

    If I recal correctly:

Upper left number signified cylinder diameter

Lower left was for driver center diameter

Of course the initials under the locomotive number were for the fort scott division.

What was the large letter on the left for? S for switcher? What is the T in this example below? What other letters were used for different engines? I'm specifically interested in what letter would have designated a passenger locomotive.

That is not correct. The letters represent the Frisco Lines owner, i.e., the Kansas City, Ft Scott and Memphis or Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham. The large letter represented the wheel type (Whytes’s Classification), e.g., T=Ten Wheeler. There wasn’t a letter distinction for passenger vis a’ vis freight locomotives.

BTW, I believe that the 3695’s plate belonged to another locomotive.
